Anupama Bhat On What Inspired Senior Citizen-Focused Tamanna Wearables: 'Happened To My Parents...'

Anupama Bhat and her startup, Tamanna Wearables, are working to reshape the future of wearable technology with a clear focus on safety and care. Her journey and innovative ideas were recently featured on Her StartUp Show, now streaming on JioHotstar.

Worried about your ageing parents at home? What if they feel weak and fall, and no one is around to help? That very concern inspired Anupama Bhat to start Tamanna Wearables - a thoughtful initiative focused on the safety of senior citizens. After witnessing a personal incident in her own family and realising how common such situations are, Anupama, who hails from Mangalore and has over a decade of experience in electrical engineering, decided to create a device that could help.

Anupama Bhat, who comes from Mangalore, is the founder of Tamanna Wearables. She is working on building smart wearable devices that aim to detect and predict falls, helping people stay safe and independent in their daily lives. Her focus is on using the latest technology in a simple, practical way. With Tamanna Wearables, Anupama hopes to create devices that don’t just look smart but truly make a difference to tho who need support and quick help in emergencies.

What Do Tamanna Wearables Do?

Anupama Bhat is the founder of Tamanna Wearables. Giving a brief about her product - Tamanna Wearables, Anupama Bhat shared, “We are actually a smart ring which helps senior citizens with fall detection with an SOS button on the ring which can help them get any immediate support or any emergency care if they need if they fall, you do maybe a heart attack or low BP or you maybe slip and fall, they lose balance sometimes.”

This happened to my own parents. It made me realise how important it is to have a way of knowing if something goes wrong - like if they fall. At the time, they weren’t alone at home, but we weren’t nearby either. Thankfully, it wasn’t serious. But it really made me think: what if help hadn’t come quickly?

Anupama Bhat shared, “When I started researching this, I found out that around 15 to 17 crore senior citizens fall every year in India, that’s a huge number. I also spoke to quite a few senior care homes and elderly residents, and I discovered that in some cases when they’ve had a fall, they’ve ended up lying there for several hours without receiving any help.”

Created To Save Lives In The Crucial Golden Hour

It is crucial to get help during what’s called the “Golden Hour” - the first hour after a fall or medical emergency, such as a heart attack. Immediate attention during this time can be life-saving, while delays can sadly lead to fatalities. That’s why a quick response is so important in such situations.

Anupama Bhat completed her master’s in the US in electrical engineering and spent 12 years working there to develop a device that could help in emergencies like these.

Anupama Bhat further shared, “Then we applied for Britannia's Her Start-up show so that we could get the grant to do the product development. Because there's quite a lot of expenses and money involved when it comes to product development - it's a hardware product. It is not just hardware, we also need an app that connects through Bluetooth to do the call part, to do the SOS calls. So there is software development also. So there is quite a lot of product development to be done. So we applied for the Britannia show and we are very happy to be one of the winners of the show.”

Right now, Tamanna Wearables is still in the product development stage. It should take around another two months for the product to be ready. Anupama Bhat says, “We are very proud to say we have a 100 percent made-in-India product. We are designing the hardware ourselves; we have done the product design and everything, all in India. We are not trying to buy something from China, import it, and sell it. We are doing everything from scratch. We are importing the sensors, and the chip, for example, is being imported from Europe. So they are very high-quality, high-precision sensors. We are doing everything currently in the product development stage. It will be launched by September this year.”

A Smart Safety Companion For Seniors, Disabled People, And Women

Anybody who needs, say, SOS or who might fall down or might require assistance. It could also be used by women for their safety. If they want an SOS device or feel unsafe in some place, they can just press that safety button and they can call their family members or share their details with them. So it's basically like an emergency care device for the elders of your family, explains Anupama Bhat.

Customisable SOS Contacts (Emergency Numbers)

Anupama Bhat is also working on providing emergency services through Tamanna Wearables. She said, “So we have three emergency care numbers which you can provide. You can give either your family, your neighbours, or your relatives. We are also working on providing emergency services, for example, ambulance services or the nearest hospital which can accommodate when such an event happens.”

Recognition From Britannia’s Show Added Credibility To The Startup

Being featured on Britannia’s Her Startup show was a big moment for Tamanna Wearables. It gave the team not only much-needed funding but also recognition and encouragement. The support helped build trust in their work and showed others that the startup is working on something meaningful that can really help people in need.

Anupama Bhat thanked the show and said, “The show has helped in many ways. As a founder, I would say product development is expensive, so getting the funding has been very helpful. Also, the visibility and the recognition from Britannia's Her StartUp Show have been very good for us. It gives credibility to our startup, that we are doing something which is useful for people.”

With Anupama Bhat’s vision and dedication, the team is working towards creating technology that truly makes a difference in people’s everyday lives.
