As millions of people prepare for the MahaKumbh Mela, which will start on January 13, 2025, in Prayagraj, Indian Railways has set up a large transportation network to accommodate the huge number of pilgrims. The railway has introduced 98 special trains to make travel easier for everyone attending this major religious event.
According to Ahmedabad Division Railway PRO Ajay Solanki, “For the convenience of passengers, Western Railway is running Kumbh special trains and denoting them through flex painting. Hygiene and the working of electric appliances are being taken care of. Up till now, 98 special trains have been started. RPF teams have been deployed at stations to guide passengers and ensure security.”

Additionally, official statements confirm that Indian Railways is preparing to operate more than 10,000 trains, including 3,300 special services, to accommodate pilgrims attending the Sangam Snan ceremonies during the MahaKumbh.

The first special train (Train No. 04528) will depart from Una on January 17, 2025, at 10:05 PM and is expected to arrive at Prayagraj’s Phaphamau Junction at 6:00 PM the next day. The return journey will commence from Prayagraj on January 18 at 10:30 PM. Subsequent trains from Una will run on January 20, January 25, February 9, February 15, and February 23.

Each special train will feature 18 coaches, including five sleeper coaches, 10 general coaches, one AC three-tier coach, and two luggage-and-guard coaches.

These special trains will halt at several key stations, including Nangal Dam, Anandpur Sahib, Roop Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt, Yamunanagar Jagadhri, Saharanpur, Roorkee, Najibabad, Moradabad, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, and Rae Bareli, providing easy access for pilgrims across different regions.
In addition to the special trains from northern India, the South Western Railway (SWR) has announced a one-way Kumbh Mela Express Special (Train No. 06577) between Bengaluru and Prayagraj to accommodate pilgrims from southern India. The train will depart from SMVT Bengaluru on January 8 at 11:50 PM and reach Prayagraj on January 10 at 5:15 PM.
