In an interview with Zoom TV, Mumtaz, who co-starred with Shammi Kapoor in 'Brahmachari,' revealed that she was in a long romantic relationship with him. Despite her deep affection, Mumtaz chose not to marry him as she was young and had ambitious aspirations in bollywood. Their closeness developed during the shooting of the song 'Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche,' spanning two to three years. Shammi Kapoor, who was twice her age, expressed his love and proposed, but Mumtaz, at the age of 17, decided against it, as Kapoor suggested that she couldn't continue working in films after marriage, citing Kapoor family traditions.
“I told him I couldn’t marry him because I wanted to work and fulfil my dreams. I didn’t want to be a homemaker, taking care of his children and managing the household,” Mumtaz further revealed.
Despite delivering numerous career-defining hits alongside Rajesh Khanna, her co-star in 'Do Raaste,' Mumtaz vehemently dismissed speculations about a romantic involvement with him. Disputing the rumours, she clarified in the same interview with ZoomTv, "We were a box office hit pair and worked in 10 successful films together, so it was obvious that people are going to assume that we were dating. But the truth is we didn’t have an affair." Mumtaz further elaborated, emphasising that the close and comfortable bond between actors working together extensively on film sets can be misconstrued by the public due to spending long hours together.

In a previous interview with BollywoodShaadis, Mumtaz candidly discussed her relationship with Feroz Khan. When questioned about her decision to decline marriage to the actor, she revealed that Feroz was deeply in love with an Anglo-Indian girl at the time, and though they had separated for reasons known only to them, he never proposed to her. Mumtaz clarified that their relationship was that of close friends, and marriage was never on the table between them.
After retiring from her acting career, Mumtaz has made her home in London alongside her husband, Ugandan businessman Mayur Madhvani. Together, they are parents to two daughters.
