Indian Railways is preparing to roll out the much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a new premium train designed especially for overnight journeys. Unlike the current Vande Bharat Express trains that only provide chair-car seating for daytime travel, this sleeper version will offer passengers the comfort of overnight berths along with modern facilities. The Delhi–Patna route has been chosen for its first run, making it a major upgrade for one of India’s busiest travel corridors.
Reports suggest that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will begin operations towards the end of September or in early October, just ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja. This timing is significant as thousands of people from Bihar travel back home during the festive season, creating huge demand for fast and reliable train services.
Although an official date is yet to be confirmed by Indian Railways, the train’s trial runs are already in progress. The government aims to provide passengers with a service that matches air travel in comfort, while keeping fares closer to train levels.
The new sleeper train will run between Delhi and Patna via Prayagraj, cutting travel time to around 11.5 hours. In comparison, the Rajdhani Express usually takes more than 23 hours for the same journey.

The train has been built using technology from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Interiors will feature an aircraft-style design with soft lighting, ergonomic sleeper berths, LED screens, and bio-toilets.

While the final fares are yet to be officially announced, reports suggest that tickets will cost 10–15% more than Rajdhani Express fares on the same route. Officials have explained that the slightly higher cost reflects the shorter journey time and upgraded features.
For travellers, the value lies in saving nearly half a day of travel while enjoying a premium experience at prices still lower than most flights between Delhi and Patna.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express marks a big step forward in India’s rail modernisation efforts. For passengers travelling between Delhi and Patna, it promises faster journeys, modern amenities, and improved comfort at reasonable fares. With festive demand around the corner, this train is set to ease congestion, reduce travel times, and offer a game-changing alternative for millions of travellers.
