Himachal Pradesh is all set for spell of snowfall and rain as a fresh western disturbance sets its course for the region, starting from the midnight of Monday, February 4, 2025. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several parts of the state, signaling the likelihood of cold days, thunderstorms, and lightning. The weather system is expected to affect Shimla and other areas of the state, with the impact extending into February 5, 2025.
Snowfall And Rain Predicted For Shimla And Surrounding Areas
As the western disturbance begins to affect Himachal Pradesh, light to moderate snowfall is predicted in the mid to high-mountain regions of the state, including Shimla. These areas, especially those situated at higher altitudes, are likely to witness the first signs of winter’s return, with snow expected to blanket the hilltops.
The IMD forecast also indicates that some areas in the plains of Himachal Pradesh may experience light to moderate rainfall. While these showers may not be as heavy as the snowfall in higher regions, they will contribute to a noticeable dip in temperature.
According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, India Meteorological Department Met Centre Shimla, “Shimla City - Light precipitation likely at isolated pockets in Shimla City & adjoining areas.
1. Light snow is likely at a few places in the districts Lahaul-Spiti & Kinnaur.
2. Light rain/snow likely at few places in the districts Kullu & Shimla and at isolated places in the districts Chamba, Kangra and Mandi.

Yellow Alert For Cold Days And Thunderstorms
The yellow alert issued by the IMD is a warning to residents and tourists in Himachal Pradesh to be prepared for potential disruptions caused by the weather. The alert is particularly significant for the mid and higher altitudes, where the snow and rain may lead to bad road conditions, especially in areas like Kullu, Manali, and Dharamshala.
In addition to snowfall and rain, the IMD has also warned of the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning, which could further complicate travel and daily life in affected areas. Cold days are also expected, with temperatures dropping significantly, especially during the night and early morning hours. For those planning to visit Shimla or other hill stations in the region, it's advisable to check weather updates regularly and prepare for sudden weather changes.

It’s during this period that another western disturbance is likely to become active, once again bringing chances of snowfall and rain in the region.
The Meteorological Department has forecast a significant drop in maximum temperatures across many parts of Himachal Pradesh on February 4 and 5, with a decrease of around 4-5°C. This cold spell will be followed by a rise in temperatures in the coming days. On the other hand, minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-4°C in the next 24 hours. However, after February 5, these temperatures are likely to dip again.
