If your IndiGo flight gets cancelled, you might be wondering: “Am I eligible for a refund or compensation?” With recent disruptions and many cancellations across India, it’s more important than ever to know your rights and how to claim what you’re owed. This article explains why flights are being cancelled, what IndiGo and what steps to take if your IndiGo flight gets cancelled, so youcan navigate the situation with clarity and confidence:
IndiGo, the country's largest airline, cancelled more than 1,000 flights on December 5, 2025, and is still continuing to face operational issues. Recently, IndiGo has cancelled hundreds of flights, triggering widespread disruption for travellers. The airline has cited a mix of reasons: new pilot-duty time regulations, pilot roster/crew shortages and technical/operational constraints. According to media reports, the regulatory change (on rest time and crew hours) has forced IndiGo to temporarily trim or rework its schedule, leading to cancellations or rescheduling of flights.
The last two days have seen widespread disruption across IndiGo’s network and operations. We extend a heartfelt apology to all our customers and industry stakeholders who have been impacted by these events. IndiGo teams are working diligently and making all efforts with the…

IndiGo said its flight delays and cancellations happened because of unexpected operational problems. These included small tech issues, winter-related schedule changes, bad weather, heavier air-traffic congestion, and new rules for crew work hours (FDTL). To help the airline get back to normal operations, the DGCA gave IndiGo a one-time relaxation from some of these new FDTL rules.
The result - thousands of passengers left stranded, prompting both public concern and regulatory scrutiny.
For flights cancelled between December 5 to 15, 2025, the airline is offering automatic full refunds and a waiver on all cancellation and rescheduling fees.
Passengers are also being offered alternate flights (if available), or the option to cancel and get their money back, with no penalties.
If your flight is cancelled and you want a refund or compensation, here is what you need to know:
Under guidelines from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), if the airline fails to notify you in time (less than two weeks before departure), or you miss a connecting flight due to their cancellation, you are eligible for a full refund or alternate flight, plus monetary compensation.
IndiGo's official portal states, “Your full refund for cancelled bookings till 15 December 2025, including the convenience fee, will be credited to your original payment method. The refund may appear as one or two transactions. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha told ANI, "On the 3rd (December), when we got to know, immediately we held meetings, and thereafter we coordinated with the airlines and also with the airports and other airlines, and thereafter everything has been smooth. The recovery has been very quick. We have also put fare caps. Airfare has been capped at Rs 18,000. It starts from Rs 7500 for up to 500 kilometres, and beyond 1500 kilometres, it is Rs 18000."
The compensation slabs are roughly:
i) Rs 5,000 for flights up to 1 hour
ii) Rs 7,500 for flights between 1–2 hours
iii) Rs 10,000 for flights over 2 hours
If your flight is cancelled or delayed by more than six hours and you decline the alternate, you are also eligible for a full refund.

To get a refund with IndiGo, you can use the “Manage Booking / Cancel Booking” option online, or select the “Plan B” option if offered. Refunds are promised to be automatic.
If you booked your trip through a travel agent, please reach out to them directly for assistance. Once initiated, your refund should appear in your account within a few business days.
‘Plan B’ is the airline’s cushion for travellers whose flights are cancelled or significantly rescheduled.
According to IndiGo's official portal, one can choose ‘Plan B’:
i) If your flight has been cancelled.
ii) If your flight timing has been brought forward by 1 hour or more from the scheduled time of departure.
iii) Postponed by 2 hours or more from the scheduled time of departure.
If your original flight is cancelled, Plan B should appear on your itinerary once you retrieve your booking online. You can then opt for the alternative or refund.
IndiGo has waived cancellation or rescheduling charges for flights affected during the current disruption, making Plan B a no-loss option.
