
Dr K. Laxmi Bai is a legendary 100-year-old retired gynaecologist and professor from Berhampur, Odisha, who recently made national headlines for her extraordinary philanthropy. She celebrated her 100th birthday on December 5, 2025.

The Donation: Ahead of her centenary birthday, she donated her entire life savings of ₹3.4 crore to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Purpose: The funds are dedicated to establishing a Gynaecological Oncology (Women’s Cancer) centre and program. She specifically requested that the money be used to help underprivileged women who cannot afford cancer treatment.
Additional Contribution: She also donated ₹3 lakh to the Berhampur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society to fund HPV vaccination drives for adolescent girls to prevent cervical cancer.
Recognition: Her selfless gesture earned high praise from President Droupadi Murmu, who lauded her for over four decades of service to women's welfare.

Dr K. Laxmi's academic journey stands as a testament to her status as a true pioneer in Indian medical education for women. Her path began between 1945 and 1950, when she broke barriers as a member of the very first MBBS batch at SCB Medical College in Cuttack. She continued to advance her expertise in 1958, earning both her Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) from the renowned Madras Medical College. Her academic brilliance eventually took her to the global stage; she was awarded a prestigious one-year stipend to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the world-class Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, an extraordinary achievement for an Indian woman of her generation.

Dr Laxmi is a widow with no children of her own, but she famously considers the thousands of patients she treated and the medical students she mentored as her true living legacy. Her professional career spanned over 35 years of dedicated government service, beginning with her first posting at Sundargarh Government Hospital in 1950. She eventually rose through the ranks to retire in 1986 as a distinguished Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MKCG Medical College in Berhampur.
