The workday ends, the email inbox is silenced, and you head straight for the fridge. Not for a glass of water or a healthy snack, but for that singular, ice-cold can, often a Diet Coke, the quintessential zero-calorie treat. With a satisfying psssst and a sharp, fizzy sip, you take your break.
This is the ‘Fridge Cigarette’, a social media-coined ritual for unwinding that mimics the comforting, structured pause of a traditional smoke break, but without the tobacco.
Yet, experts are flagging this seemingly harmless habit. While a moment of cold, sweet relief is tempting, is this little ritual creating a bigger emotional dependency in the long run?
A Fridge Cigarette, according to experts, is not a physical product but a psychological urge, an emotionally driven habit used to manage stress, boredom, or anxiety.
“A fridge cigarette refers to the comforting ritual of grabbing a cold Diet Coke or similar soda from the fridge to unwind,” explains Kanikka Malhotra, Clinical Nutritionist and Founder of Health Pepper, Delhi. “It mimics how smokers take a smoke break to relax, but without tobacco or nicotine.”
Rima Bhandekar, Senior Psychologist at the Helpline Mpower Aditya Birla Education Trust, calls it “emergency stress seeking”—the act of impulsively grabbing a cold soda to “drown down the stress,” a specific ritual used to de-stress rather than respond to hunger. The cold air, the sound of the can opening, and the immediate fizzy sweetness all contribute to the feeling of a short, pleasant reset.

The powerful appeal of the Fridge Cigarette lies not in the beverage itself, but in the ritual. “Small rituals like fridge cigarettes provide comfort because they’re predictable, simple, and offer a momentary pause,” says Malhotra. This routine gives a hectic day a sense of control and acts as a structured way to self-soothe.
Bhandekar emphasises the sensory experience: “It is more related to wanting the sensory experience of coolness hitting you to get away from the thoughts of stress.” For the brain, this simple act of anticipation, motion, and familiarity is a treat, providing emotional stability when life feels chaotic.
As Anshul Singh, Team Lead, Clinical Nutritionist at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram, notes, the brain starts to connect these repeated actions to short-term relief, making the ritual calming.
While one cold sip might feel like a reset, relying on a soda for emotional regulation can have serious implications for both the body and mind.
Diet sodas are the go-to fridge cigarettes, but their zero-calorie status doesn't mean zero harm.
Artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, can disturb gut health and increase sugar cravings, according to Malhotra. She notes that chronic consumption of these sweeteners may negatively impact the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome, which is intimately linked to mental health.
Malhotra also warns that frequent use has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems and metabolic syndrome.
Additionally, overconsumption increases caffeine intake, which can lead to anxiety and poor sleep, says Bhandekar. She also points out that regular consumption of cold sodas can lead to bloating and headaches.
This is where the habit transitions from a harmless break to an unhealthy coping mechanism. “The brain learns to grab soda instead of dealing with feelings over time,” explains Singh. “This makes it harder to get real emotional strength.”
Bhandekar warns of dopamine dependence. The brain builds a stronger emotional dependence on this instant relief tool. If the ritual is missed, anxiety can increase. “If one is not careful, this may lead to dependence on these choices to avoid certain emotions rather than processing it in a healthy way,” she states.
In essence, the Fridge Cigarette becomes a form of emotional avoidance. The cycle of stress leading to soda stops you from developing healthier ways to handle anxiety, creating an emotional deficit masked by carbonation and sweetness.

A Fridge Cigarette on occasion is generally fine, but when it becomes your daily, necessary coping mechanism, it’s a red flag.
The comfort we seek in that cold can is valid, but the source of that comfort should be the break, not the potentially disruptive ingredients. Finding alternate rituals—a five-minute meditation, a brisk walk, or simply a glass of sparkling water with fresh lemon—can deliver the same sense of predictability and pause without the emotional and physical side effects.
Your pause button should empower you, not create a subtle, chilled dependency.
