One of the most significant film festivals of Asia, The International Film Festival Of India (IFFI) kick-started on the 20th November and will conclude today. The 53rd edition of the film fest is happening in Panaji, Goa. The mega event like every year, this year too, witnessed Indian and International celebrities in attendance.

Veteran actor Asha Parekh was one of the speakers at a session at the ongoing film festival recently. The actor spoke about how Indian women are largely falling for western clothing. She shared how it is hurtful to see Indian women wearing western outfits instead of traditional outfits like salwaar kameez, ghaghra choli.

Everything Has Changed, Says Veteran Actor Asha Parekh

During the session, the actor said, “Everything has changed. The films that are being made. I do not know, we are so westernised. Gowns pehen ke wedding pe aa rahi hain ladkiyan. Arre bhaiya, humari ghaghra choli, saariyan aur salwar-kameez hai aap wo pehno na. Why don’t you wear those?.” (Our ghaghra choli, sarees, salwar kameez, wear those)

“They just watch the heroines on the screen and wish to copy them. Screen pe dekh ke wo jo kapde pehen rahe us tarah ke kapde hum bhi pehnenge …mote ho, ya jo, hum wahi phenenge. Ye western ho raha hai mujhe dukh hota hai (They watch actors on screen and want to wear clothes like them irrespective of their body type. It is hurtful to see such westernisation)," she added.

When Jaya Bachchan Questioned Western Clothing

Jaya Bachchan is always making headlines for some reason or the other, especially for being the feisty personality she is. Recently, Jaya Bachchan too during granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda's podcast 'One Crown, Many Shoes' questioned why Indian women prefer wearing western clothes. Her daughter, Shweta Bachchan tried to reason that it was because of the ease of movement since most women are not just at home today. However, Jaya Bachchan wasn't convinced. She said, “I feel very unknowingly we have accepted that the western clothing gives that man-power to a woman. I would love to see a woman in woman power. I am not saying, ‘go wear a saree’. But in the west also, women used to dress in dresses. This whole thing changed much later when they started wearing pants.”
