Expectations of women across the country are soaring high from the first full-time woman Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman, who will table the full-fledged Union Budget 2019 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi led-BJP government came to power with a thumping majority in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Sitharaman will be presenting the budget on July 5.

Women are hoping that being a woman herself, Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech may announce more provision for them and upgrade the existing ones in her maiden budget speech. Women are expecting more safety, an increase in the number of public toilets, more public transports exclusively for women among others to be included in Budget 2019. This correspondent spoke to women of all walks of life to know what they want from Miss Finance Minister.

Covering a distance of over 50 kilometres every day, I spoke to women co-travellers in Delhi metro to find out what they want from the Finance Minister in the upcoming budget.

Women Safety

Almost 95 per cent of women - working women, housewives, students -expectation from Budget 2019 is safety. Women said they no longer want to think twice or give reasons to their families before stepping out at any hour of the day. Not just allocation of funds, women want use of advanced technologies like Camera surveillance in public transport, crowded places as well as deserted areas, mobile SOS to be put in places in cities, towns and villages. Women patrol should be intensified, feels some.

"My tuition ends and 8 in the evening and just a minute after that my parents start calling me to know my whereabouts till I reach home. They reach my coaching centre on days I don't answer the call due to extra teaching hours. I don't want my parents to be worried all the time about me. I want the finance minister to ensure there is adequate security for us so that my parents are tension free," said Sakshi Joshi a class 12 student.

Meenakshi Jaiswal, a working professional in an IT firm in Gurgaon echoed the same. Jaiswal said, "There are days when I have to stretch my working hours. My husband makes sure that I get an office cab on my way back and be on call till I reach home." She added the security of women should be taken care of and the finance minister should ensure that women are safe.

More Public Transport Exclusively For Women

Women feel unsafe to use public transport during office hours as they are crowded and men often misbehave and even do not vacate seats reserved from them. "More buses, exclusively for women, should be pressed into service," says Natasha Gaur, a banker in a private bank.

Many feel that just like only women local trains that ply during peak hours, similar should be done with metro on major lines during office hours. Women feel that more cabs, autos driven by lady driver will ensure their safety, as well as help women, get employed.

Cheap Fares In Public Transport

Women are also expecting some concession in fares of public transport. “Just to avoid the rush in public transport, I opt to call cabs to make it to my office on time. The prices are skyrocketing during office hours and one has to pay surge price to reach their destination. We want some concession for women in terms of price in public transport,” says Neetu Aggarwal, who works as a beautician.

Women feel that some concession in fares of buses, metro for them will help them save and meet the rising inflation costs.

More Public Toilets For Women

"We often have to think twice when we are out and want to use toilet. There are very few public toilets for women. We expect the Finance Minister to announce setting up of more number of public toilets for women," says Nasreen Khan, a resident of Hauz Khas.

Jobs For Women

Apart from security, women expect more jobs for them should be announced in Budget 2019 which will help them meet the costs of running their family as well as pay exorbitant fees of their children's school and tuitions.
