Sushmita Sen was 18 when she was crowned Miss India and then Miss Universe. She was the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title to India back in the year 1994. Sushmita Sen is already an inspiration to many but the story behind her Miss India winning gown is an inspiring one too!
Recently, a video of Sushmita Sen talking about her Miss India on a show went viral on the net. Sushmita Sen can be seen talking to late actor Farooq Shaikh on a show called Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. In the snippet, Sushmita Sen can be seen sharing how her Miss India winning gown was stitched.
Well, it wasn't any big designer! Sushmita Sen got the winning gown done by a local tailor as her family couldn't afford it. Do you know Sushmita Sen belongs to a middle-class family? They couldn't afford an expensive gown for her but they didn't let that come in between her dreams.
Family Couldn't Afford A Designer Gown
She said, “Itne paise nahi the ki hum designer kapde pehen ke stage par jaye. Chaar costumes chahiye the. Hum middle class ke log hai aur humko humari restrictions maloom the (We didn't have enough money to afford designer outfits and I needed four costumes. We were middle-class people and we knew our restrictions)."
In the video, Sushmita Sen says, “My mother told me that they were not going to look my clothes, but look at me. After buying the fabric from Sarojini Nagar market, we gave it to a local tailor downstairs and asked him to make a good dress from it, My mother made a small rose from the remaining bit of cloth. We also bought new black socks, cut it, added elastic to it and I wore them as gloves!”

Intentions Should Be Right
Sushmita Sen's message from the story was to make people understand that one doesn't need money to get what they want, they just need the right intention. She said, “You don't need money to get what you want, your intention should be right.”
On the work front, we miss watching the beauty queen on the silver screen. She has been a part of hit films like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Main Hoon Na, Biwi No.1, Kyunki Main Jhuth Nahi Bolta among others. Her last film was a Bengali film Nirbaak that she did in the year 2015. She last told in an interview that she isn't getting good scripts. Well, we really hope she gets one really quick!
