Radhika Madan became a big television star overnight with Ekta Kapoor’s Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi but no one knew she would come this far in short span. While her actual debut movie “Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota” recently won an award at the Toronto International Film Festival is still to release in India, she is first up with Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Patakha” that will mark her debut in the industry. Radhika Madan will be playing one of the two warring sisters in the movie. Her character is called Champa Kumari a.k.a “Badki”.
Recently, Radhika was in Delhi to promote the movie with cast Sunil Grover and Sanya Malhotra. We had a quick chat with her.
Preparation For The Role
We did a lot of preparations. We did a lot of readings with Vishal sir and Charan Singh Ji who has written 'Do Behnein'. After that, we had a lot of workshops with Atul Mongia. One thing that helped us a lot to prepare for the role is our stay in the village. We stayed at Charan Singh Ji's house for five-six days. We used to get up 4 in the morning to get water from the well. Charan Singh Ji didn't know how to speak in Hindi so we had to speak in his dialect. That sharpened our dialect and helped us perform on the sets. Getting into the character was challenging and fun at the same time.
The Dreamy Role
Radhika shared that this movie was nothing short of a dream for her. She shared that it is something out of this world to be a part of a Vishal Bhardwaj film. Radhika still feels it's like a dream. Radhika feels she is quite blessed to have had a movie like Patakha in her kitty. She shared it was a great experience to work with Vishal sir. He is open to ideas and an easy director to work with. She shared that she just couldn’t say no to the movie. Radhika said, ”I auditioned for Patakha and Vishal sir chose me. Of course, when there is a director like Vishal Bhardwaj you can't say no.” When I read the script, I was like I want to live Champa Kumari's life. The role excited me a lot.
We asked how strong is her role in the movie, owing to the fact that all women characters are in the spotlight in Vishal Bhardwaj’s movies. She shared, “same goes for Patakha. Our characters are nothing short of 'Patakhas'. The trailer speaks loads of the kind of characters we are playing in the movie.”

Vishal sir used to make us think and throw a lot of questions at us. He never spoonfed us. He used to ask us why the character is behaving in a certain way, what made that person that way.
Radhika Madan has a huge fan following all across for her show Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi and as she makes her debut to the silver screen with Patakha, a lot more is expected from her. Patakha is slated to release on 28th September 2018.
