The legendary late actor Irrfan Khan and Sutapa Sikdar’s son Babil Khan is all set to step into the film industry with his first project, Qala. His foray into Hindi cinema has created a lot of buzz, however he recently pointed out in an interview with Film Companion that he was not a big fan of the word ‘debut’.

Unlike a lot of ‘nepo kids’, he was blunt about the fact that nobody would have cared about him if he was not a star kid.

Directed by Anvita Dutt (of Bulbbul fame), Qala stars Tripti Dimri and Swastika Mukherjee. It narrates the complex relationship between a singer and her mother in the backdrop of Kolkata in the 1940s.

In the movie, Khan appears as Dimri’s rival. Produced by Karnesh Sharma’s Clean Slate Filmz, Qala is all set to release on Netflix on December 1.

Disapproval of term ‘debut’

Ahead of his film’s launch, Khan shared his thoughts about why he disapproves of the term ‘debut’. He told the news portal that if he was not Irrfan Khan’s son, nobody would have cared about his debut. “I would have just been an actor trying to get into films, auditioning, and maybe getting a part,” he continued.

He added that getting recognised through your work is much more important than inheriting it. “I feel like the words ‘debut’ and ‘launch’ always make the individual greater than the story and the film,” he said.

Khan also noted that from the get-go, he wanted to honour his mother’s upbringing. “When I got the film I was happy that I was playing a supporting character to a female-led film, it was very important to me,” he said.

He further elaborated about the usage of the word by saying that he doesn’t feel at ease at all and it makes him very uncomfortable. “Why would an artist want that? I just don’t know. It’s not me. It kind of hurts me, a little bit,” he said.

His father, Irrfan Khan died in April 2020 after fighting a two-year long battle with neuroendocrine tumour. Babil reminiscing about the old days, shares his memories with his father on social media. Besides Babil, the actor who gained worldwide acclaim with his versatile performances is also survived by his younger son, Ayaan Khan.
