Karwa Chauth is just around the corner. The Hindu festival is observed by married women across India where they fast all day for the long lives of their husbands. For ages now, women have performed different rituals on the day of the festival like having Sargi before sunrise, performing puja with other women in the community, moon sighting to break their fast, and getting gifts for their mother-in-law to name a few. All these customs are associated with popular legends.
A popular Karwa Chauth tale dates back to the time of Mahabharata. It is believed that Draupadi observed a fast for Arjuna's well-being during the war. According to legends, it was Draupadi's devotion towards her husband that kept him safe during Mahabharata and helped the Pandavas win against the Kaurawas.
Once a king was off hunting and he met a saint who told him that if he observed Karwa Chauth, prosperity would come his way. On the saint's advice, both the king and queen observed a fast, and later their kingdom flourished.
Another popular tale around Karwa Chauth tells that a woman whose name was Karwa was married to Satyavan. Karwa was a devoted wife who always prayed for the well-being of her husband. Once she observed a fast for him on the day of Karwa Chauth (Karwa chauth songs for reels) when her husband was unwell. She asked Yama, the god of death, to spare her husband's life, and seeing her worship for her husband, Yama granted her the wish.

On the occasion of Karwa Chauth, Queen Veeravati went to her parents' house. After sunrise, she started fasting. Seeing her unable to bear the hunger, her brothers created a false moon using a mirror so that she could break her fast. Soon after this incident, her husband fell ill. As soon as she heard the news, she rushed to her husband's house. On her way, she met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who informed her that her husband would die soon. Veeravati observed a fast again and this time with her devotion, she was able to save her husband's life.

Another legend behind the origin of Karwa Chauth is Karwa Devi and Savitri. Savitri prayed to Lord Yama, the god of death to return the souls of her husbands after they were killed and Karwa Devi fulfilled her wish seeing her trueness.
Though these legends don't confirm the origin of Karwa Chauth, they highlight marital devotion, love, and the power of a wife's prayers for her husband. This year, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on November 1, 2023.
