The day for which we have waited for so long is here. Grey’s Anatomy season 19 premiered on October 7 with episode one dropping on Hotstar, and it could not have been more thrilling than what we just saw.
It brought back a lot of memories of season one and episode one. What started with Richard Webber giving the tour of the hospital has now come full circle with Meredith, the only survivor in the race amongst her peers, taking on the role of the interim chief to Grey’s Memorial Hospital.
Here are the highlights of episode one.

Jules Millin confesses about having slept with Nik, the orthopaedic surgeon, to Mika Yasuda. The new interns seem to be at each other’s throats much like the OG team - Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, Alex and George.
Meredith takes them to the operating room and gives them a powerful speech. She tells them that a highly advanced OT is only as good as the surgeons cutting their are skilled.
“We didn’t pick you for your grades, we picked you for your fight,” said Meredith. She also advised them to “learn to expect the unexpected at all times.”

We never expected to Schmitt deliver a baby, and that too a natural birth when in his first few episodes, he fainted at the sight of blood. Though he hated working but promised Webber that he would be a strong candidate as a resident.
If he would not prove to be worthy, he declared to return to the gynaecology department and emerge as strong as a vagina. It was a fun reference because he just saw one expanding to give birth to a giant baby with respect to its original size.

As mentioned early in the episode, there was a tornado in Seattle, which created havoc and brought 14 brain-dead people to the hospital. While Mika made a snide reference to multiple brain-dead patients available for organ donation surgeries.
During the clinical examination, Amelia told Lucas Adams to inform the parents of one of the brain-dead patients. He was hesitant, and Shepherd guided her to be kind and gentle while giving next-of-kins such news.

In the last season, we saw Link and Joe struggling to maintain their friendship. First, Link confessed his crush on Joe. Second, they slept together. Third, what was just a friend-with-benefits relationship for Link, turned out that Joe developed feelings for him.
When they confronted each other, Joe came clean, and things became a little awkward. However, the two decided to go back to being friends. It is refreshing to see them bonding over Link’s ‘scandalous’ relationship (keep spark alive in long-distance relationship) with Jules, much like how Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey started.

While standing in a queue Marsh and Ndugu bond over what was happening in the hospital and in their personal lives. However, Maggie Pierce witnessed them laughing together and immediately went to Grey’s office where Link confessed to sleeping with an intern.
Grey told him that she was not judging him, but joked that he must stay away from elevators in the future. Pierce told her that Marsh was here, and she had been sad for six months. Therefore, she must go and talk to him and explain why she asked him to go to Minnesota.

Grey complies and asked Marsh to step in for a triple organ transplant surgery as it was her first day of the residency programme, and she could not vanish as a chief.
This episode took us back to the first few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, where we saw interns mixing up labs and patients, running around like puppies and cutting each other’s throats to get a chance to witness surgery in an OR.
In the end, we saw Owen and Teddy returned back with suspended medical licenses. Owen would have to be supervised for at six months. We cannot wait to see what the future of the hospital holds with new interns, residents and Grey as the Chief.
