Easy Ways To Store Cabbage: Cabbage is a kitchen staple that adds crunch and nutrition to countless meals, but it often spoils faster than we expect. With just a few simple tricks, you can extend its freshness and make it last much longer. Here’s how you can store cabbage the right way without losing its flavour or texture. Here are some easy tips to follow:
If you have bought a whole head of cabbage, don’t wash or cut it before storing. Excess moisture can make the leaves rot. Wrap the cabbage loosely in a paper towel and place it inside a perforated plastic bag. Store it in the crisper drawer of your fridge, where it can last up to 2–3 weeks.
Once cabbage is cut, it begins to lose freshness quickly. To store cut cabbage, wrap it tightly in cling film or place it in an airtight container.
Michigan State University states, “Store cabbage in a plastic bag or wrap in the refrigerator at 41 °F or below. Cabbage will stay fresh for several weeks. Before using cabbage, cut out the core of the cabbage with a sharp knife and rinse the leaves with cool running water. Drain thoroughly.” Always keep cut cabbage refrigerated.
Cooked cabbage dishes like stir-fries, curries, or soups should be stored in airtight containers in the fridge. They can stay good for about 3–4 days. For longer storage, freeze cooked cabbage in small portions.
If you want cabbage to last even longer, freezing is a great option. Michigan State University states, “Frozen cabbage and Chinese cabbage are suitable for use only as cooked vegetables. Select freshly picked solid heads. Trim coarse outer leaves from head. Cut into medium to coarse shreds or thin wedges, or separate head into leaves. Water blanch for 1 1/2 minutes. Cool promptly, drain and package, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Seal, label, date and freeze.”
