After the theme of Met Gala 2027, 'John Galliano: Horizons,' was announced, the museum received severe backlash over the fashion designer's past antisemitic and racist remarks. The designer himself has decided to step away from the exhibition following the backlash and issued an official statement as well.

Why was the Met Gala 2027 exhibition on John Galliano cancelled?

In 2010, Galliano, in a drunken state, made antisemitic remarks towards a couple and even allegedly said, "I love Hitler." Just before  Paris Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 in February 2011, the video surfaced on the internet.

Following this, he made insulting comments towards museum curator Geraldine Bloch about being Jewish and made racist remarks at Bloch's South Asian friend.

After these incidents, Dior announced Galliano's suspension. His manager claimed that these comments were made under work-related stress and multiple addictions, with the designer's mental state being affected by Steven Robinson's death, who was his friend and close business partner.

Galliano was later found guilty in the case and was sentenced to a suspended fine of €6,000.  

Due to these incidents, the Met and John Galliano decided not to move forward with the exhibition.

What did John Galliano say about the cancellation of the Met Gala 2027 exhibition?

After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time. I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.

"I do not want the debate surrounding me to place The Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute. I also recognise and respect that an exhibition honouring my work would be painful for some," the statement further added.

Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Met's Costume Institute, also accepted the museum's responsibility to "examine difficult histories with rigour, candour, and care and recognise the pain and concern this exhibition has caused."

Meanwhile, Anna Wintour, Met Trustee, praised Galliano's decision and called him 'courageous'.
