1. The Main Valley

Also known as the Valley of Flowers, Yumthang Valley looks entirely different in winter after it is covered with thick snow.  You can enjoy the scenic location and just soak it all in by relaxing amid the snow. You can also play in the snow in the white meadows and much more.

2. Yumthang Hot Spring

After playing in the snow, do not forget to visit the Yumthang Hot Spring, which is a natural spring and does not freeze in winters. Even during freezing winter months when ambient temperatures drop well below zero, the water in the spring stays at a warm 50 degrees Celsius. 

3. Zero Point

Zero Point is located 13- 23 km further up from Yumthang Valley at an altitude of 15,300 feet. It is also the final civilian outpost. You will find some small hot tea and Maggi stalls at Zero Point. It should be noted that it is accessible only if the weather and heavy snowfall permit. An additional supplementary vehicle charge and special permit over the standard Yumthang trip will also be required.

4. Lachung Village and Monastery

Lachung Village and Monastery is located about 24–26 km before Yumthang Valley. Visit the 19th-century Lachung Monastery and also witness the beautiful village surrounded by mountains. No ticket is required to visit the village and monastery.

5. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is located inside the valley, where you can spot high-altitude birds like wagtails, pipits, and the distinctive Ibisbill near the frozen or flowing Yumthang Chu River. It is open from 8 am to 3 pm.

How To Reach Yumthang Valley?

By air:

1. Bagdogra Airport is located about 120 km from Gangtok and is connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
2. The second option is Pakyong Airport, which has limited operational flights, mostly arriving from Kolkata and Guwahati.

By train:

1. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP), Siliguri, is the closest railway station and about 125–190 km from Gangtok.
2. Darjeeling Railway Station is the next best option and is located roughly 98 km from Gangtok.

By Road:

1. You need to take several routes to reach Yumthang Valley.
2. First, travel from Gangtok to Lachung, which takes about 5-7 hours.
3. Then, from Lachung to Yumthang valley, it is around and takes around 2 hours.

What is the best time to visit Yumthang Valley for snow?

If you want to witness the beautiful and thick snow, the best time is from October to December/February. Otherwise, visit between March and June to see the vibrant valley of flowers bloom.

What are the Special Permits Required to Visit Yumthang Valley?

1. You will need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), which is mandatory and generally costs around Rs 200 per person.
2. Apply for PAP through a registered local tour operator or travel agency based in Sikkim.
3. Self-drive or private non-registered vehicles are not permitted, as travel must be in a registered local commercial vehicle.
4. Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License along with passport-sized photographs are required. Aadhaar cards and PAN cards are not accepted for protected area permits in Sikkim.
