5 Real Places That Look Like AI-Generated Images

The modern age of deep fakes and AI art makes it difficult to tell the difference between a digital creation and a snapshot from reality. However, nature has always had a penchant for glitches in its geographical makeup. In different corners of the Earth, there are areas of the planet that are so colourful, geometrically structured, and alien-looking that they challenge what we know about the workings of geology and physics. From the surreal salt planes that make one disappear to forests where the trees seem otherworldly, these five locations show that the world’s most impossible visual images can be found right here on Earth.
5 Real Places That Look Like AI-Generated Images
1. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
When the surface is coated with a thin layer of water in the rainiest months of the year, the largest salt flat on Earth turns into an ideal, endless reflection of everything surrounding it, and you won’t be able to see where the sky ends.
2. Pamukkale, Turkey
The place is made up of magnificent white travertine terraces that contain sparkling turquoise-coloured waters filled with minerals. The rock formation gives the impression that they are frozen waterfall or even frozen snow in summertime, causing people to question its authenticity.

3. Zhangye Danxia Geopark, China
According to Solopackers, “The rainbow mountains, also known as ‘Colourful Hills.’ The surreal, multi-coloured stripes on the hills are caused by red sandstone and mineral deposits that formed over a span of 24 million years.”

4. Lake Hillier, Australia
Located in Western Australia, in the Middle Island, this lake has a consistent hot pink colour which never changes, no matter how much water is taken from it into a glass. The startling hot pink colour, in contrast with the deep green forest and the blue sea, resembles the normal glitch of an AI.

5. Socotra Island, Yemen
Because of its extreme geographic isolation, a third of Socotra's plant life is found nowhere else on Earth. The most famous is the Dragon's Blood Tree, which grows in a perfect, symmetrical umbrella shape and bleeds a thick crimson sap, mimicking a sci-fi landscape.
