Parents, make your days easier by making these easy finger foods for toddlers recipe!

Mini Idli Fingers

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Idli batter (fermented rice and lentil batter)
  • A little ghee (clarified butter) or butter for greasing

Steps:

  1. Pour small amounts of batter into a mini idli mould or fill regular moulds about half full. Steam for 8-10 minutes, or until cooked through and firm.
  2. Let them cool slightly, then unmould the idlis.
  3. Cut each mini idli or the smaller portion of a regular idli into finger-sized strips or small, safe pieces.
  4. Lightly smear with a tiny bit of ghee for extra flavour and nutrition, and serve warm.

Besan Cheela Strips

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup besan (gram flour)
  • Water (to make a pourable batter)
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped or grated vegetables (e.g., carrot, onion, capsicum)
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • Oil or ghee for cooking

Steps:

  1. Mix besan, vegetables, turmeric, and enough water to create a smooth, slightly thin pancake batter (like crepe batter). Do not add salt for babies/young toddlers.
  2. Heat a non-stick pan and lightly grease with oil or ghee. Pour a ladle of batter and spread into a small, thin circle. Cook on both sides until golden and cooked through.
  3. Once cool, cut the cheela into short, easy-to-hold strips.

Sweet Potato Tikki

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium Sweet Potato, boiled, peeled, and mashed
  • 1 tbsp Rice Flour or Gram Flour (Besan) for binding
  • Pinch of Ginger paste (optional)

Steps:

    1. Mix the mashed sweet potato, rice/gram flour, and optional ginger until combined.
    2. Shape the mixture into small, flat patties (tikkis).
    3. Lightly grease a pan and cook the tikkis on medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
    4. Make sure that the tikkis are cooled before serving.
