Why Is Jaipur Called The Pink City Of India?

The story behind Jaipur getting the infamous title of the ‘pink city’ takes us back decades ago. It was the year 1876, and Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Albert, was set on taking a trip to India. During this time, the Maharaja (King) of Jaipur, Sawai Ram Singh, was ruling the city and got to know about the British Prince’s visit. In true Indian, "Atithi Devo Bhava" (treat your guests like you would God) fashion, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh went all out on his hospitality and spared no expense. To impress Prince Albert, the Maharaja of Jaipur decided to make a grand gesture and covered the entire city with pink paint! It’s said from then on that Prince Albert was the one behind the nickname of Jaipur as the ‘Pink City’, and the name has stuck since.

This is not where the pink tale of the city ends; there’s another part to it. After the Queen of Jaipur expressed her love for the colour pink, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh went one step further to make her happier. The Maharaja of Jaipur got a law made which stated that all future buildings in the city must be painted the same blush-colour. Would you agree that this grand gesture makes Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh the original pookie? I would think so, yes!
