It is not an everyday thing to see an Indian museum being ranked above the Met and the Louvre, but this 11-year-old museum in Patna, Bihar, achieved that milestone. In the 'World's 100 Best Museums 2026' list, this Bihar Museum has secured the 9th rank and also been ranked the best one in Asia. But how did this museum put Indian architecture, heritage, and art to the radar among the other 100 others in the list.

Inside Bihar Museum's Architecture, Heritage, and What It Says About Indian Art:

Here's how Bihar Museum has given Indian art, architecture and heritage have been put to the spotlight with the new ranking.

1. Architecture:

Partially opened in August 2015, Bihar Museum is a combination of Japanese architecture blended with Indian heritage. It is designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, lead architect of Maki and Associates, and Mumbai-based Studio Opolis on a 13.9-acre. Its design comprises interconnected low-rise buildings, landscaped courtyards and exhibition spaces.

In 2013, around Rs 498 crore was invested to create this historic museum as we know it today. The exterior is wrapped in weathering Corten steel, giving it a rusted, earthy look that honours India's ancient metallurgical roots. The building has a 5-star GRIHA rating for sustainable green design.

2. Heritage

There are over 30 thousands artifacts in the museum, showcasing different eras and time periods of India's history, whether it is the Gangetic plains from the Stone Age to the 1764 Battle of Buxar. Like the Louvre's Mona Lisa, the Bihar Museum has Yakshi, which was unearthed on the banks of the Ganga in 1917. It is a 2000 year old life-sized Mauryan-era sculpture is carved from a single block of highly polished Chunar sandstone and is famous for its mirror-like Mauryan polish.

The other treasures include Kurkihar bronzes, prehistoric stone tools, a Kushan-period slab depicting the birth of Buddha, rare manuscripts, coins, folk art, among many others. There are also three historical Art Galleries, which will take you through the Indus Valley, the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka, the Gupta Golden Age, and Sher Shah Suri.

3. Indian Art and Craft

For decades, Indian heritage was seen as something to be preserved in colonial-era buildings. However, Bihar Museum proves that Indian art doesn't need a Western frame to be world-class.

From Pataliputra to Nalanda, Bihar was the centre of Indian civilization. This museum finally gives that history a stage bigger than the Patna Museum's basement.

The Bihar Museum didn't beat the Met and Louvre by copying the formula of others. It earned the spot in the Top 100 list by being unapologetically rooted and uncompromisingly modern.
