Bhutanese Dishes That You Ought To Try Before Going Back Home

In Bhutan, a lot of cheese is consumed which is mostly fermented yak cheese along with a lot of chillies. When you are in this most peaceful country in the world, you will get to try not just Bhutanese but also Nepali, Tibetan and Indian food. Here are some of the dishes that you got to try:

Ema Datshi

This is basically an amalgamation of cheese and chillies. This meal is there everywhere and is kind of a staple for everyone. The chillies could be either green or red which are sliced lengthwise and cooked with datshi (Bhutanese Cheese) and a lot of butter. Every individual has its own recipe of the dish therefore the taste will never be the same at all places. 

Kewa Datshi

Kewa means potatoes here, which makes the dish an amalgamation of scalloped potatoes and Bhutanese cheese. This dish is very mild, like comfort food. 

Shamu Datshi

This is the third staple dish here, which is made with mushrooms and cheese. Here mushrooms is called Shamu. All these dishes are to be had with rice. 

Shakam Ema Datshi

So far we read on vegetarian offerings by Bhutan which were scrumptious and cheesy. Now we come to non-vegetarian dishes where Shakam is Bhutanese dried beef. If you like beef, you will like this dish. The beef is dried and preserved so that t tastes like beef jerky, however, it is thicker and is not totally dehydrated. The beef is cut into pieces and cooked with cheese and chilli.

Shakam Shukam Datshi

This is a rather rare dish which is made with dried white chillies. These dried chillies are called Shukam. This dish is cooked with dried beef, cheese and white chillies which add a sour spicy taste to the dish.

Phaksha Paa

After beef and yak, pork is a very loved meat in Bhutan. the dish is made with slices of pork which are stir-fried with dry red chillies and a bit of vegetable as well. 

Gondo Datshi

This is basically butter egg fry, the ultimate Bhutanese scramble egg dish. The eggs are scrambled with cheese and a dollop of butter with a sprinkle of dried chilli. Have it with some chilli sauce and red rice.

Juma

It is a commonly made Bhutanese sausage dish which includes minced meat, rice and spices. You will taste a bit of Sichuan pepper as well. 

 

Yaksha Shakam

As the name suggests, this dish has Yak meat which tastes similar to beef but better. It is a very nutritional dish. The yak meat is dried into a jerky like meat and can be cooked in a number of ways. 

Jasha Maru

This is a Bhutanese Chicken Stew which is also called a chicken curry. This dish has a noticeable ginger taste with dry spicey flavour. 

Hoentay

It is said that the dish originates from Haa Valley in Bhutan and Hoentay is similar to momos but made with buckwheat dough wrapper. Filled with spinach or turnip leaves and cheese.
