In the heart of Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district lies a complex steeped in history and controversy the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex. This site, with its ties to the legendary Raja Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty, has recently become the focus of intense scrutiny and legal debates. Both Hindu and Muslim communities stake their claims on this contested ground.

Tucked deep inside the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh lies one of the most controversial and historic complexes, the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula. This place is connected with the legendary Raja Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty and has lately gained a lot of attention amidst legal controversies and debates. The land in question is claimed by both Hindu and Muslim communities.

Bhojshala Saraswati Temple History

Raja Bhoja, who ruled from 1000 to 1055 AD, was not just a powerful monarch but also a passionate patron of learning and the arts. According to various media reports, he established a college in Dhar that came to be known as Bhojshala. This institution attracted students from across the region, eager to study a diverse range of subjects including science, grammar, medicine, and philosophy.

Beyond his educational endeavours, Raja Bhoja's architectural ambitions were equally grand. He began constructing a Shiva temple at Bhojpur that, if completed, would have rivalled the famous Hindu temples of Khajuraho in size. Although the temple remained unfinished, epigraphical evidence confirms Bhoja's role in founding and building Hindu temples throughout his realm.

Bhojshala Saraswati Temple Controversy

In March 2024, the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula complex became the site of an archaeological survey by the Archaeological Survey of India. This was ordered in a March 11 ruling by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, asking the ASI to complete the investigation within six weeks.

At the heart of the dispute are conflicting claims over the site. The Muslim community asserts their right to the Kamal Maula Masjid, while Hindus claim the area as the Vagdevi temple.

Supreme Court Intervention

It was on April 1 that the Supreme Court of India intervened with a word of caution. The ASI team, district administration, and the local police have been warned against any physical excavation that will alter the character of the premises. This comes in the wake of an appeal by the mosque authorities against the High Court's original order.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court has ordered nothing to be done based on the findings of the excavation without its express permission.
