Since Malaika Arora introduced the world to her talk show - Moving In With Malaika, the model and actor has been making headlines every day. The show traverses through the ups and downs of her life.
In the recent episode, she addressed a few things while performing a small comedy sketch. She called out a troll who tried to pull her down by bringing up the age difference between her and Arjun Kapoor.

The host started by pointing out how people have problems with everything she does. She also said many actors have been envious of her because she is ‘ageing like fine wine’.
She addresses the fact that trolls in the past have tried to roast her by calling her auntie, buddhi and cradle snatcher. She added, “People advice you to wear a saree if you are going old, but even if you wear a saree they say you’re wearing so many clothes that we cannot recognise you.”
After this, she targeted the troll, who told her that she was ruining Kapoor’s life by dating him. To this Arora said that the actor was no longer in school. She pointed out, “Every time we are on a date, it is not like we are bunking classes. I didn’t catch him on the streets where he was catching Pokemons.”
She said he was a grown-up man, and the two of them are consenting adults. The talk show host pointed out the irony that people call a man ‘player’ if he is dating a younger woman or girl. “On the contrary, if a woman dates a younger guy, they call her a cougar,” she added.
Arora said that people have made fun of her walk. Some said she walks like a duck or cat, while others say she walks like a cheetah. She pointed out that after the divorce, she and Arbaaz Khan have moved on from each other and so should the world.

Why Is It Always Women?

Well! This seems like a redundant question of the year, decade and even this century. But that seems to be the norm. From actors to entrepreneurs, it is women who bear the brunt of living a life defined as ‘normal’ or ‘standard’ by society.
It is not only Arora, but trolls have not spared Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sushmita Sen and Priyanka Chopra for dating or marrying men younger than them. It is funny because they never questioned their respective halves of being with mature and successful women.
Even when the rumours of Sushmita Sen dating Lalit Modi surfaced, she was called a gold digger. We have hardly ever heard the same term being used for a man. Recently, news surfaced of Hollywood actors Chris Evans and Leonardo DiCaprio dating younger women. Most people appreciated these men in their 40s dating women in their 20s.

How do we still have different standards for men and women? We do not even spare women for the way they choose to dress, have kids or put on weight. The patriarchal norms are so deep-rooted that as soon as we see a woman doing something for herself, we find it normal to troll her.
We hope that as we ring in 2023, society would change a bit.
