Deepika Padukone along with her husband Ranveer Singh stepped out last week to do their civic duty and cast a vote, but little did they know that the mom-to-be Deepika will soon be ambushed by the new wave of internet speculation. Society being society, started policing her body, questioning the reality of her pregnancy. Instantly, social media flooded with comments that were harsh, insensitive and purely evil.

The couple announced their pregnancy in February and since then they have found themselves in the centre of some wild theories. First, there were surrogacy rumours and now, with Deepika flaunting her little baby bump, the internet has done a full 180—her bump is being called fake. “Is she really pregnant or fake bump,” “clean acting of being pregnant,” “she stooped so low for PR.” Comments keep getting vile.

Their audacity is obviously one reason, but on top of that, there’s pure jealousy and resentment! We are constantly fed the idea that women can’t have it all. A strong, independent and successful woman like Deepika always seems like a threat to society. Their underlying jealousy and resentment towards her perfect life becomes indigestible to some people who literally don’t have a life and thus, they make degrading such women their life’s mission. And social media turns out to be their best weapon. 

Society waits for such women to make a mistake or two so they can double and fall. If there’s none, they can always make something up. These horrid comments on her pregnancy are proof of how uncomfortable people are with a woman being happy and successful. This is proof of how sexism is deeply rooted in patriarchy.
