She was a fresh face of a glorious production house, Dharma. Her debut character Shanaya, the popular college girl who lives in her world, comes from an affluent family and got her one tag in common, 'work in progress'. KJo's fresh take on college romance, Student Of The Year portrayed Bhatt as the rich, spoilt girl who is every boy's heartthrob, the imperfect girl with a kind heart was Poo lite from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Though audiences liked her screen presence, her performance failed to leave a strong mark.
The Unanticipated Leap
Post SOTY, little did anyone imagine Bhatt taking that unanticipated leap. Alia Bhatt proved her mettle with Highway in 2014. Bhatt as Veera in the Imtiaz Ali directorial proved her acting prowess. Her performance was emphatic. For most viewers, Highway was about moments when Bhatt was fragile yet courageous. All and all, it was Alia Bhatt's unconventional performance that gave Highway its soul.
Earning A Nod From Audiences
Barely a few years after starring in her first Bollywood project, Bhatt's career graph saw a continual rise. Alia's 2 States, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Kapoor & Sons, Udta Punjab, Dear Zindagi, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania proved her versatility as an actor. Yes, there were lows, Shaandaar, Kalank, and Sadak 2, failed to get numbers but they hardly had any effect on Bhatt's growth graph.
Outreaching The Zenith
The best was yet to come. Alia Bhatt was on her way to more evolved, mature roles. Bhatt's Raazi was a masterstroke. As Indian spy Sehmat Khan, Bhatt impressed both audiences and critics. Her stellar performance brought an end to the debate around her career in Bollywood and we met Bollywood's most bankable actor.
Her next, Gangubai Kathiawadi helmed by ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was even bigger. Bhatt portrayed the titular role, a flawed character with multiple layers. Alia's performance was luminous, to say the least.
With SS Rajamouli's RRR, Alia Bhatt also left her mark in the Pan-Indian film space. As Badru Qureshi in Darlings and Isha in Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva, Alia Bhatt only pleased her fans with a continuous stream of hits.
Alia Bhatt's Head And Shoulders Above Her Contemporaries
Bhatt has been a part of showbiz for over a decade now. There were times when she found herself amidst controversies. Interestingly, none of them revolved around the typical Bollywood catfight which made her stand out.
However, her one incorrect response on Karan Johar's show, Koffee With Karan, on being asked the name of the President of India won her the 'dumb actress' tag. Following the show, she was mocked multiple times and often asked questions about current affairs. Little did she ever take it to heart and always gave back with a smile.
In an interview, speaking about the trolls calling her dumb and unintelligent, she said, “I love it when people think that I am unintelligent or that ‘oh she is so dumb’. I genuinely do, because they make so many memes on me, which add to the popularity, and then it’s like you are loving my movies. So there is possibly something that I am doing right in the movie business. I also want to put out this message for young girls, general knowledge and bookish intelligence, in my opinion, are not intelligence. To survive in a world, you have to have a certain emotional intelligence, which is possibly the highest form of intelligence.”

Over 15 films later today, Alia Bhatt is one Bollywood actor who can't be type casted. She is one actor who has proved her mettle with diversified roles. Just like her contemporaries, Bhatt too has her lows, however, she didn't hit the bottom and quickly rose up. Her growth chart has been persistent for years now and doesn't seem to move a bit going further.
Next, Alia Bhatt has many big banner movies in the pipeline - Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Ranveer Singh, Heart Of Stone which is a Gal Gadot-led movie is Alia's Hollywood debut, Jee Le Zaraa helmed by Farhan Akhtar and Takht, an epic drama steered by Karan Johar. By the looks of it, all of them are anticipated to see a big run at the box office. Even though they don't, little will the failure take away from Bhatt's gleaming career. No?
On the personal front too, it seems like Bhatt didn't ever have a blueprint. She decided to tie the knot at the age of 29, at the peak of her career to the man she always manifested to be with, Ranbir Kapoor. Since her teens, she admired Kapoor and wanted to get married to him. And it happened for real. Many questioned her choice of marrying a man over a decade older than her, and having a baby at the pinnacle of her job. In an interview, she shared that she doesn't regret her decision at all. She said, "Yes, at the peak of my career, I decided to get married and have a baby. But who says that marriage or motherhood will change anything to do with my work? Even if it does, so be it. I don't care."
