Pitru Paksha Dos And Don'ts You Should Know About

Pitru Paksha holds great significance in the Hindu religion. People donate food and water for underprivileged people and animals according to the scriptures during this time to appease their ancestors. If scientifically talked about, this time of the year is also the time when most of the species are breeding, so feeding the stray animals is good for their evolution and reproduction. Pitru Paksha is the time that is dedicated to worshipping our ancestors. Different types of Daan, rituals and Pujas are done to seek their blessings. It is believed that feeding a priest, the underprivileged ones and animals is auspicious and benefits the overall being of a person. The Pitru Paksha will be observed from September 29 till October 14 this year. 

Things You Must Keep In Mind While Performing Shradh:

  • You are advised to use only Desi Ghee during the preparation of food for the priest and other rituals. 
  • You are also suggested to serve the food in Silver utensils rather than Copper utensils as Silver is considered to be a positive metal and its use in serving the Brahmins is believed to be auspicious.
  • One should follow a Tamasic diet during this time which means giving up the use of onion and garlic.
  • If you’re a non-vegetarian, you are advised to take a break from the non-vegetarian diet. According to science, you should not take a non-vegetarian meal as this is the time for breeding for most of the animals. (Things To Offer To Cows During Shradh)

  • You must consume a Satvik homemade diet during this period of time.
  • There must be something sweet on the plate for the priest, you can make Kheer for them as it has been a long tradition to offer Kheer to the Brahmins.
  • While preparing the Shradh Bhoj, you should not use rotten or stale food.

  • You must have often heard your elders telling you not to buy or wear new clothes or things during this time, well, according to the scriptures, it is said to be inauspicious.
  • You should present the priest with new clothes, money, fruits and sweets as Dakshina. It is believed that these offerings are meant for the ancestors and we receive their blessings in return.
