Pitru Paksha 2025: Can Menstruating Women Perform Shradh? Know About Rituals

There are a number of beliefs prevalent in our society regarding different rites or rituals and everyone has a different opinion on it. While it is important for you to follow the traditions, you must also understand the proper procedures and rules associated with them.

Pitru Paksha has a special importance in the Hindu religion. Just as any rites of passage have different meanings, performing Shradh rites is also considered important so that your ancestors can attain peace. If a person does not perform Shraddha or Tarpan for the ancestors during the period of Pitru Paksha, then it is believed that the ancestors do not get peace and Pitra Dosh may occur in the house. Pitra Dosh can lead to many problems in your house and their solution may not be so easy.

Pitru Paksha is dedicated to honouring and paying tribute to one's ancestors. During this time various rituals are performed to express their gratitude and seek blessings. Apart from this, people also feed food to dogs, cows, crows and ants as it is believed to be delivered to the ancestors through them.

Generally, the women of the house prepare food for the ancestors and also take part in the Shradh rituals. Why Is Pitru Paksha Considered Important?

According to mythology, during this time, our ancestors come to earth and take water and food through us. You are advised to pay full attention to the reverence in the house so that the ancestors can be completely satisfied and can take food.

Should Women Perform Shradh Sanskar During Periods?

Generally, Shraddha rituals for ancestors are performed by men only and it is believed among Hindus that the Tarpan and Pind Daan done by men is acceptable to the ancestors. But the sons and daughters-in-law also take part in the Shradh rituals of the ancestors and offer food to them.

If you get your periods, then according to astrology, you are advised to stay away from some rituals. You can simply pray to your ancestors for forgiveness.

If You Start Menstruating On The Day Of Ancestors' Shradh

If you are not able to take out food on the date of any of your ancestors due to your periods, then take out food for them on the day of completion of Pitru Paksha i.e. on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya and also serve food to a Brahmin.
