We asked our expert, Ishaan Yadav, a celebrity astrologer, about the intricate rituals and rules associated with the Shahi Snan, especially for Naga Sadhvis regarding their menstrual cycles. This ancient Hindu tradition, steeped in spirituality and astrology, presents a fascinating paradox, ‘can women, often considered embodiments of the divine feminine, participate in the sacred bath while menstruating?’ Learn more about this in detail in this article.
Ishaan said, “The ongoing MahaKumbh in Prayagraj has already witnessed two major Snans, with the next one set for January 29, 2025, on Mauni Amavasya. The Shahi Snan is a key spiritual event, marked by the participation of Naga Sadhus and their female counterparts, the Naga Sadhvis. However, the question arises: how do Naga Sadhvis observe this sacred ritual during menstruation?”
“Despite their ascetic detachment from societal norms, Naga Sadhvis accommodate natural bodily functions like menstruation with special rituals. During their cycle, they are not permitted to enter the river. Instead, they perform a symbolic Ganga Snan by sprinkling Gangajal (holy water) over themselves, a practice regarded as equally sacred,” shared the astrologer.
He continued, “When menstruating during the Mahakumbh, a Naga Sadhvi remains in her camp, avoiding the main procession to the riverbank. In a private setting, she mixes Gangajal in a container and completes her ablutions, ensuring her spiritual connection remains intact.”
Astrologer Yadav explained that the life of a Naga Sadhvi is rooted in discipline and renunciation. “Unlike their male counterparts, they wear unstitched saffron garments, shave their heads upon initiation, and perform their own Pind Daan, a ritual typically reserved for the dead,” he added.

He also mentioned, “They embrace simplicity, often using cloth instead of sanitary pads during their cycles and applying ash to alleviate discomfort. These practices highlight their commitment to ascetic ideals.”
