After a long wait, Indian audiences will finally get to watch Santosh, the widely praised Hindi film starring Shahana Goswami. Directed by Sandhya Suri, the film has earned recognition across the world for its hard-hitting portrayal of gender, caste, and power in rural India.
Following its premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, Santosh travelled to multiple prestigious festivals including the BFI London Film Festival and the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. The film was also shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category as the United Kingdom’s official entry, earning nominations at the BAFTA Awards and a spot among the National Board of Review’s Top 5 International Films of 2024.

After months of uncertainty, Santosh will finally make its digital debut on Lionsgate Play on October 17, 2025. The film stars Shahana Goswami in the titular role alongside Sunita Rajwar. This release marks an important moment for viewers who have been awaiting its arrival ever since its international acclaim.
The film was initially slated for a theatrical release on January 10, 2025, but its screening was halted due to objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Reportedly, the board demanded edits to scenes depicting police brutality, caste discrimination, and gender-based violence. The filmmakers, however, refused to make these cuts, choosing to preserve the film’s integrity and message.
Speaking about the film, Shahana Goswami said, “Santosh is a story that holds a mirror to society. Sandhya Suri has created a wonderful film. I am happy that this film will now reach Indian audiences.”

Produced by Good Chaos, CineFrance Studios, and MetFilm Productions, Santosh follows the journey of a young widow, Santosh, who inherits her late husband’s position in the police force. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she begins investigating the rape and murder of a Dalit girl, uncovering harsh realities of patriarchy, caste hierarchy, and systemic injustice.
Through Goswami’s powerful performance, the film delivers a piercing commentary on caste and gender dynamics in contemporary India, a story that is as relevant as it is uncomfortable.
