Who Is Dr Shaheen Shahid? Lucknow Doctor Arrested for Alleged Links to Jaish-e-Mohammed in Delhi Blast Case

Once known as a bright academic, Dr Shaheen Shahid’s name has surfaced in one of the most shocking terror investigations in recent years. The Lucknow-based doctor, who formerly taught at Kanpur’s GSVM Medical College, was arrested from Faridabad last week for her alleged links to the Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Authorities believe she played a key role in what they call a ‘white-collar’ terror module, operating through educated professionals like doctors and academics.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the probe into the case, following the recent car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort that killed at least 13 people. Officials allege that Dr Shaheen’s role extends beyond mere association—she was reportedly responsible for organising JeM’s women’s wing in India.

Who Is Dr Shaheen Shahid? Alleged Role in JeM’s Women’s Wing

Investigators claim that Dr Shaheen Shahid was tasked with setting up Jamaat-ul-Mominaat, a women’s branch of JeM, under the direct supervision of Sadia Azhar, sister of JeM founder Masood Azhar. Sadia heads the group’s women’s unit in Pakistan.

Sources allege that Dr Shaheen used her professional networks to mobilise sympathisers and recruit educated women into the organisation. Her alleged contacts across the border were reportedly instructing her to expand JeM’s presence in India through covert communication channels.

Dr Shaheen Shahid Connection to the Red Fort Blast

Dr Shaheen’s arrest followed the detention of two other doctors, Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie and Dr Umar U Nabi, both affiliated with Faridabad’s Al-Falah University. Investigators believe the trio formed the core of a larger inter-state module responsible for providing logistical and financial support to terror operatives.

During raids, agencies recovered an AK-47 rifle, multiple magazines, live rounds, and other weapons from a Swift Dzire car registered in Dr Shaheen’s name. Officials allege the car was used by Dr Muzammil during operations related to the Red Fort blast.

Raids, Family Detention and Background

Following her arrest, joint teams from the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Jammu & Kashmir Police raided Dr Shaheen’s residence in Lucknow’s Lalbagh area. Her brother, Dr Parvez Ansari, an assistant professor at Integral University, was detained for questioning, while digital evidence including mobile phones and hard drives was seized.

Her father, Syed Ahmad Ansari, expressed disbelief over the allegations, saying he had no knowledge of his daughter’s purported connections. Dr Shaheen had joined GSVM Medical College as a lecturer in 2006 but went on unauthorised leave in 2013, leading to her termination in 2021.

Colleagues recall her as a ‘brilliant but withdrawn’ professional. After divorcing her husband in 2015, she reportedly moved to Faridabad, where she came into contact with other accused linked to JeM.

NIA Steps In as Probe Deepens

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has handed over the Red Fort blast case to the NIA, confirming its status as a suspected act of terror. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has held multiple review meetings on national security, assuring that central agencies will conduct an in-depth investigation into the Delhi explosion and the network behind it.

Authorities are now examining Dr Shaheen Shahid’s financial transactions and communication records to uncover the full extent of her alleged involvement in the terror module.
