What is the significance of Valmiki Jayanti?

Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated to honour and to commemorate the birth of the ancient Indian poet and philosopher Valmiki, who is thought to have lived around 500 BCE. He is also the author of the Indian epic poem Ramayana, and is also worshipped as the avatar of God by members of the Balmiki sect.

Not only did he write the Ramayana, but he himself also appears as a major character in the Ramayana, as a monk who receives the banished queen Sita into his hermitage and acts as a teacher to her twin sons, Lava and Kusha.

It is believed that Valmiki is the tenth son of the god Varuna, born after Varuna's seed fell into a termite hill, which earned him the name of Valmiki. According to other legends, Valmiki was a thief before turning into a rishi, but some other scriptures suggest that he was born a Brahmin.

After there was no rain in his region for years, he had to rob people for the sake of his family. After he tried to rob seven sages, they felt pity for him and gave him a Mantra to meditate upon.

On this auspicious occasion, let us not just worship Valmiki, but also follow his teachings about speaking truth, protecting dharma and believing in second chances.
