As Teachers’ Day 2026 comes up in India, people are saluting teachers for changing people’s lives with the gift of education. Though Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is always commemorated on this day, one can never talk of Indian education without giving a tribute to Savitribai Phule, whose contributions have always been overlooked by people. As a woman educator, social reformer, and poet of India, Savitribai Phule worked against the strong patriarchal and caste system to kindle the flame of women’s education.
Who Was Savitribai Phule?
Savitribai Phule was born on 3rd January 1831 at Naigaon in Maharashtra. Savitribai Phule was a visionary social reformer and spent her entire life fighting for equality among individuals. When she was still young, she got married to Jyotirao Phule, who was also a visionary and a great reformer. The two started a social revolution which focused on empowering marginalised groups by educating girls and women.
How Did Savitribai Phule Become A Teacher?
Savitribai was illiterate when she got married to Jyotirao when she was just nine years old. However, seeing the sharp intelligence and determination of Savitribai, Jyotirao decided to educate her on his own. Later, Savitribai had formal training as a teacher in Pune and Ahmednagar.
In 1848, Savitribai and Jyotirao started India's first school for women at Bhide Wada in Pune against all social opposition. As she used to go to school every day, the traditionalist critics used to throw mud, stones, and cow dung at her. Nonetheless, Savitribai used to have an extra saree in her bag and used to change it while reaching school.
Savitribai Phule’s Role In Women’s Education
She created several schools for girls and those belonging to lower castes, thus challenging the monopoly held by centuries-old social barriers on education.
Apart from education, she created a home for rape victims and widows named Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha, and campaigned against the killing of girl infants, child marriage, and the ill-treatment of widows.
She provided scholarships and models of learning to decrease the dropout rate of poor children.
Inspiring Lessons From Savitribai Phule’s Life
The life journey of Savitribai provides eternal lessons for present-day society. She demonstrated how real faith could triumph over extreme hostility and resistance.
Literacy, according to her, was not just an educational requirement but was a key to dignity, equality, and self-respect of mankind. During the third Bubonic Plague in 1897, she established a hospital to take care of the affected people and finally fell victim to the plague herself.
Conclusion
Savitribai Phule was more than an educator; she was a trailblazer, opening the gates of knowledge for millions of Indian women. Celebrating the memory of this great person on Teachers’ Day 2026 makes us realise how education is one of the strongest tools for bringing about change in society.
