Shreya Ghoshal Is No Lata or Asha, She Is Unique And These Songs Prove So

Shreya Ghoshal continues to rule because her hold over classical renditions is as good as her prowess in singing sensuous numbers. Here's a look at melodies which make her truly stand out from her contemporaries.

best songs of shreya ghoshal playback singer

The saccharine sweetness of her voice gives way to a playful sound and sometimes that sound hops onto a naughty melody with such a natural flair that a singer of her calibre is loved by everyone. That’s Shreya Ghoshal for you! We were first mesmerised by her voice in Sanjay Leela Bhansal’s Devdas and then there was no looking back. She reminds many music lovers of yesteryear legends like Lata and Asha but clearly she is an artist in her own right with a distinct voice. Shreya’s musical journey began at the tender age of four when she started getting lessons from her mother. Apart from her mother tongue Bengali, she has sung in other regional languages such as Assamese, Oriya, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi and Nepali as well. She holds the rare achievement of winning the National Award for 2 years consecutively and also has June 26 declared as Shreya Ghoshal Day dedicated in her honour by the State of Ohio. With her entry in Bollywood, singers of that time such as Alka Yagnik and Sunidhi Chauhan had taken a backseat. And she continues to rule because Shreya’s hold over classical renditions such as ‘Mohe Rang Do Laal’ is as good as her prowess in singing sensuous numbers such as ‘Chalo Tumko Lekar Chalein’ or playful soft romantic songs such as ‘Ye Ishq Haaye’, ‘Manwa Laage’ that tugged at your heart strings.

So what are those melodies which make her truly stand out from her contemporaries? Have a look:

Dola Re Dola

dola re dola aishwarya madhuri dancing

Shreya gave a tough competition to veteran singer Kavita Krishnamurthy for this song picturised on Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. Her playback for Aishwarya was perfect as this jugalbandi dance song in Devdas required a young voice that could match up to the strong vocals of Kavita.

Mere Dholna Sun

mere dholna sun bhool bhulaiyya

Aami je tomar chin chin chin...this is the expression that most people remember from the movie Bhool Bhulaiyya and the lines are from Shreya's song Mere Dholna Sun which was a big hit. Shreya’s hold over sur and variations were perfectly displayed in this song picturised on the beautiful Vidya Balan. She managed to give us all goosebumps with this classical rendition.

Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai

jaadu hai nasha hai bipasha basu

After singing nice melodies in Devdas, Shreya did a complete turnaround singing for the 2003 movie Jism. Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai was all about female sensuality and the feelings of a woman in love. With this song, she just transformed her singing style altogether.

Chikni Chameli

chikni chameli song katrina kaif

Asha Bhonsle may have been a very versatile singer belting out bhajans and cabaret songs with equal ease but Lata Mangeshkar rarely ever ventured in the arena of party numbers. Shreya, who is often called the true successor of Lata was mainly singing romantic and playful numbers like Teri Ore, Zoobi Doobi and Pal Pal and but she turned the tables around with Chikni Chameli. This was an out and out item song with raunchy lyrics to which Katrina gyrated in a sensuous style. The song had hints of Mungda sung by Usha Mangeshkar but Shreya Ghoshal truly made it her own. When it came out, it was a roaring success and is still one of Shreya’s top hit songs.

Sun Raha Hai Na Tu

Arijit Singh may have won a million hearts with this Aashiqui 2 songs but Shreya’s version of this number is haunting. Her soft voice makes you want to keep it on repeat and her voice was the perfect playback for Shraddha Kapoor who plays a singer in the film.
