Will Priyanka Gandhi be Indira Gandhi Part II? Will she replace Rahul Gandhi as a better leader? Does she have it in her to become the next PM? Will she recreate the magic of 1999 for Congress? So many questions and the burden of answering them lies on the shoulders of Priyanka Gandhi who has joined active politics by becoming the Congress Party Secretary (east UP in-charge) .
Her first brush with politics came in way back in 1989 when Priyanka Gandhi, then a teenager, campaigned for her father Rajiv Gandhi for the Lok Sabha elections. Her fiery speech while campaigning for the 1999 LS elections had helped Congress win in Rae Bareli and Amethi in UP. Till now, Priyanka had remained in the backseat by handling electioneering work starting with supporting her brother Rahul Gandhi when he made his poll debut in 2004.
So Why Did The Congress Take So Long To Bring Her To The Forefront?

While traditional voters, staunch party supporters and Congress leaders have always seen the image of Indira Gandhi in Priyanka, the son of the dynasty was pushed ahead to take a plunge in politics. After Rahul’s abysmal performance in polls and his topsy-turvy image got huge thumbs down, it was becoming even more difficult for star campaigner Priyanka to come to the fore, lest it led to comparisons between the siblings. But with Rahul baba’s resurgence after the recent wins in assembly elections, it seems that she can now finally claim her place.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Kapil Sibal’s tweet is hinting that Priyanka may be fighting the elections from Varanasi or Gorakhpur:

She may have the Gandhi legacy with her but her marital connection with the Vadra family may not work in her favour as her husband Robert Vadra is embroiled in several controversies starting from using the Nehru-Gandhi name to seek favours and illegal real estate deals to connections with arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. Moreover, she will also have to face the same Italian nationality jibes that her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother had to face all these years. How Priyanka manages to wrestle in the political arena with these issues is something that we’ll have to see.
Indian women in politics continue to hugely stir the emotions of the masses whether it is the enigmatic Indira, the iconic Jayalalithaa, the ferocious Mamata or the notorious Mayawati. But one thing is for sure that the entry of Priyanka Gandhi in this list will be a unique page in history. What’s more, with the impending debut of an all women’s party in elections this year, looks like the game is hotting up for women. So let’s wait and watch.
