Pitru Paksha 2026: Why Is Food Offered To Crows? Know The Traditional Belief

Pitru Paksha is a sacred 16-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honouring ancestors and our dearly departed souls. During this fortnight, families perform sacred rituals like Shradh, Tarpan, and Pinda Daan to express deep gratitude to their forefathers and seek their eternal blessings for peace and prosperity. 

Among the various traditional customs observed during Pitru Paksha, offering food to crows, is a ritual known as 'Kaka Bali' which holds immense spiritual importance. 

The Deep Significance of Crow Feeding (Kaka Bali) During Pitru Paksha 

According to traditional Hindu beliefs, departed ancestors (Pitrus) cannot accept physical food directly in human form. It is believed that ancestral souls take the form of crows or use them as a divine medium to visit the earthduring Pitru Paksha. Therefore, when a crow consumes the food offered during Shradh, it is regarded as a positive sign that the ancestors have accepted the offering. Also, after accepting the food it is believed that they have showered their grace upon the family.

The Mythological Link: Crows as Messengers Between Earth and Yamaloka 

According to the Hindu mythology, crows are closely linked with Lord Yama, the god of death, and afterlife. Crows are regarded as his messengers, as they are capable of moving freely between the lives of the living and that of the dead (Yama Loka). Offering food to crows is also believed to appease Lord Yama. It is said that it ensures that the departed souls remain protected, and peaceful in their journey ahead.

Feeding Crows In Pitru Paksha Linked To Ramayana 

The practice of feeding crows during the Pitru Paksa period is connected with a legend from the Ramayana. According to the tale, Jayantha, the son of King Indra, assumed the form of a crow, and troubled goddess Sita. Lord Rama shot an arrow towards him, Jayantha realised his grave mistake, and asked for mercy. Lord Rama accepted his apology and granted him  a divine blessing: any food offered to crows during Pitru Paksha would directly satisfy the hunger of ancestral souls.

Beyond religious mythologies, crows play a very important role in the ecological cleaning of the environment. Feeding them during the Pitru Paksha reinforces our duty towards nature, and reminds us that devotion involves honouring our roots.
