7 Members Of A Family Found Dead In Haryana's Panchkula

A family of seven who had come to Panchkula to attend a religious sermon by Bageshwar Dham's Baba Dhirendra Shastri were found dead inside a car in Sector 27. When the police arrived, they found seven people inside the vehicle.

The deceased have been identified as Praveen Mittal (42), his wife, their son, two daughters, and Praveen's parents. The family had been residing in a rented accommodation in Panchkula and had recently attended a religious event at Bageshwar Dham before the incident.

The police also spoke to a local resident of Sector 27, Harsh, who was the first to notice the Mittal family inside the car late on Monday. Harsh said he was out for a walk near his house when he spotted a Hyundai car parked with several people inside. He also mentioned that the rear windshield of the car was oddly covered with a towel, which caught his attention. Harsh told the police, “One person was alive among all the occupants of the vehicle. I managed to pull him out of the car. I saw there were vomits everywhere inside the car. The man whom I pulled out identified himself as Praveen Mittal. He told me that he had consumed poison, and all his family members who were in the car had also consumed poison.”

Police Finds A 2-Page Suicide Note

A two-page suicide note was recovered from the Hyundai car, wherein Praveen Mittal confessed to being overwhelmed by financial debts, bankruptcy, and taking full responsibility for the family's decision. According to the police, Praveen Mittal said in the note, “I have gone bankrupt. I am responsible for all this. My father-in-law should not be harassed. The last rites of my family members shall be performed by my cousin.”

Police Statement On Panchkula's Haryana Mass Suicide

Speaking about the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Panchkula Himadri Kaushik said, “Our forensic team has reached the spot. We are analysing the details and are scanning the car thoroughly. Some facts that have emerged primarily indicate that this is a matter of suicide.”

DCP (Crime), Panchkula, Haryana, Amit Dahiya said, “This is too early to reach any conclusion. Investigations are in progress, and we are trying to get in touch with their kin to complete the inquest and other formalities. At the moment, we are investigating the case from all angles. We are questioning the people in the area and going through the CCTV footage.”
