MS Dhoni’s Production House Announces First Venture in Tamil Film Industry

Dhoni Entertainment released a documentary film Roar of the Lion on Disney+ Hotstar which was a popular watch on the platform.

Dhoni Entertainment Private Limited, the production house founded by Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni along with his wife Sakshi Singh, has announced their upcoming debut venture in the Tamil film industry. The production house issued a statement on this Diwali on October 24, 2022, announcing the same.

“Legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his wife Sakshi Singh Dhoni’s production house Dhoni Entertainment (DEPL) has commenced the various stages of producing entertainment content, across all mainstream languages. Dhoni Entertainment has already carved a name for itself by acquiring a mythological sci-fi book, also by producing and releasing the popular documentary the Roar of the Lion based on the journey of the team of a short format cricket IP, they are also producing Ad films, short films and web shows,” read the statement.

Prior to this, Dhoni Entertainment released a documentary film Roar of the Lion on Disney+ Hotstar which was a popular watch on the platform and a short film titled Women’s Day Out which spreads cancer awareness.

However, the production house’s decision to venture into the Tamil film industry comes as Dhoni has a special connection with Tamil Nadu as he has been playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 14 years. “The exceptional bond that Dhoni shares with the people of Tamil Nadu is eminent. Reinforcing this extra special relationship further, Dhoni entertainment will be producing its first film in Tamil, a family entertainer conceptualised by Sakshi Singh Dhoni, Managing Director of Dhoni Entertainment.”

Directed by Ramesh Thamilmani, who has also helmed the new age graphic novel Atharva- The Origin, the project is set to go on floor soon. However, the cast and crew of the upcoming project is yet to be announced.

As per the statement, the production house is also in talks with several filmmakers and scriptwriters to create and produce “exciting and meaningful” content across genres including science fiction, crime drama, comedy, suspense thriller, and more.

“From the moment I read the concept written by Sakshi, I knew it was special. The concept was fresh and had all the potential to be a fun family entertainer. I am honored and very grateful for this opportunity to develop this really fresh concept into a feature film story and to be directing the film as well,” said Thamilmani.

While the Business Head of Dhoni Entertainment, Vikas Hasija, said, “Post-pandmeic, the business of the main-stream films in India has become a singular entity, the boundaries are blurred and there is no Regional cinema vs Hindi cinema debate anymore. As more, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films are equally celebrated in the nation, Dhoni Entertainment is exploring projects in multiple languages. Our priority is to reach our Indian audiences in every nook and corner of our country through meaningful stories. Though our first film will be originally made in Tamil, it will be released in multiple languages as well.”
