Justice Indira Banerjee, the outgoing Supreme Court judge, hoped that more women should be appointed as judges at the apex court in the future as she bid farewell to the court. “I do hope that there will be more women in the future...Hope there is cooperation for the weaker, and there be equality and justice in the shortest span of time. Thank you all,” said Banerjee during her farewell speech.
On September 23, 2022, Justice Banerjee retired from her duties after a two-decade-long career in the judiciary. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held a formal function to bid farewell to Justice Banerjee, the senior judge among the four women judges in the top court today evening.

Justice Banerjee is the fifth senior-most judge in the apex court who retired from the apex court after serving for over four years. Since the Supreme Court came into being in 1956, it has witnessed a handful of women judges over the past 72 years including Justices Sujata V Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana P Desai, R Banumathi, and Indu Malhotra.
Justice Banerjee’s retirement has brought down the number of serving judges in the Supreme Court to 29 against the sanctioned strength of 34 including the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Banerjee has spent her career with 16 and a half years in the bar and 20 years seven months on the bench. She began her career in the Calcutta High Court in 1985 followed by the Madras High Court before stepping into the Supreme Court. She said, “At the time of departure, one does feel somewhat nostalgic. And I'm reminded of that day about 35 years ago, when I first stepped in the SC as a shy junior coming to SC from Calcutta HC”
Remembering her initial days, Justice Banerjee said, “For me coming to legal profession was a coincidence and at least one person in my family was opposed to it, that was my father because he always thought I didn't put enough efforts in my studies.”

Bidding farewell to Justice Banerjee, Attorney General K K Venugopal said, “We have very few women judges on the bench and it is very sad that we are losing one of the best amongst them.”
