According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Yamuna had invited her brother, Lord Yama (the God of Death), to her home after a long period of separation. Being overcome with joy, she applied a tikka or tilak on his forehead and cooked for him. Moved by her love and dedication, her brother, Yama, granted her a boon. Goddess Yamuna requested that any brother receiving a tilak from his sister on this day would be protected, leading to the festival getting its name of ‘Bhai Dooj’.
