Miss Universe has reportedly updated its beauty pageant rules, and in a historic move will start welcoming wives and mothers to compete for the crown for the first time. According to The National, the 2023 edition will commence with these rules.
Miss Universe, which celebrated its 70th edition last year, is in the process of making the biggest change to its selection process by allowing married women and mothers to participate from the onward editions. As per reports, national pageant directors have received an email briefing on how the organisation has always strived to evolve with the times and the latest decision was the natural next step. “We all believe that women should have agency over their lives and that a human’s personal decisions should not be a barrier to their success,” read the official statement.

Earlier this year, the organisation led by two powerful women, CEO of MUO Amy Emmerich and President of MUO Paula Shugart, stepped up to rebrand its tagline - Miss Universe, Beautifully Confident. Announcing the same, the official statement read, “We are excited to share the evolution of our tagline with you. In its origin, Miss Universe existed to identify the most confidently beautiful women. Our organisation has a legacy of championing strong females, and our evolution speaks to that rich heritage. Now, as the organisation continues to grow, we know that beauty is about who we are and how we show up, Beautifully Confident. The Miss Universe Organisation exists to advocate for a future forged by women. We believe a confident woman can change the world, and the first step is showing up as your beautifully authentic self.”
Earlier, only women aged between 18 and 28 who have never been married or had children were allowed to apply; however, there is still no confirmation on the age. The contestants who had never been married or had children had to demonstrate to a group of judges why they were the right choice to represent their nation. Also, an official confirmation on the new set of rules from Miss Universe Org is awaited (Aarya Walvekar: The 18-Year-Old Who Was Crowned Miss India USA 2022).
