Sonam Raghuvanshi (Wife of Raja Raghuvanshi) Surrenders

Sonam was taken into custody after she turned herself in at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, just days after her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found in a deep gorge, according to Meghalaya Police. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Meghalaya later arrested three men linked to Raja’s murder. Two of them are from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, while the third is from Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh. Indore Police supported the operation and worked closely with officers from the East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. The arrests were made late on the night of 8 June 2025, as confirmed by Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh.

In a major twist in the murder case of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi has reportedly admitted to being involved in the crime, as per police sources.

According to reports, Sonam confessed during police questioning. Although such confessions aren't valid in court unless made before a magistrate, her statement is now a key part of the investigation.

Sonam married 29-year-old Raja on May 11 in Indore. Just ten days later, they left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya. By May 23, both had gone missing. On June 2, Raja’s body was found in a deep gorge in the East Khasi Hills. Sonam reappeared on June 8 in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, claiming she was ill. She surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

Meghalaya Police said Sonam confessed again during questioning in front of another accused, Raj Kushwaha — her alleged boyfriend.

Kushwaha, 21, worked for Sonam’s family and was reportedly in a relationship with her both before and after her marriage. Police believe the two planned Raja’s murder together.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s Statement

Multiple search teams, including local police, the National and State Disaster Response Forces, local volunteers, drones, and sniffer dogs, were deployed to trace Sonam after she was reported missing but their efforts didn’t lead to her. During the search, a woman’s shirt and a raincoat, believed to have been used by her, were discovered near the spot where the murder took place. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma later applauded the police for solving the ‘Raja murder case’, which had raised serious concerns about the impact on the State’s tourism image.

He also said, “The police achieved a major breakthrough within seven days. The female [Sonam] has surrendered, and the operation is on to catch one more assailant.”
