From Barbarik to Shyam
The tale of Lord Khatu Shyam Ji belongs to the epic of epics, the Mahabharata. Born as Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha, he was no ordinary warrior. It is said that Lord Khatu Shyam was gifted with divine strength and a trio of unstoppable arrows, destined to be the mightiest of them all. But as fate would have it, greatness often demands a price.
Before the great war of Kurukshetra commenced, Barbarik approached the battlefield with an oath that he would support the side that was losing. While it was a noble sentiment, no doubt, it might have potentially rendered the war moot. It is said that Lord Krishna, the forever divine strategist, tested him, and ultimately revealed that Barbarik’s participation would unravel the cosmic balance, to preserve the sanctity of Dharma.

Then, Barbarik willingly offered his head to Krishna, asking in return that he might witness the war he was born to fight. Krishna was moved by his sacrifice and blessed him, “In Kali Yuga, you shall be worshipped as Shyam, a form of me.” And Khatu Shyam Ji was born, not of war, but of wisdom and selflessness.
