Are Banks Open Or Closed On May 1, 2025?
According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, the bank holidays are based on state-specific festivals and events in addition to a few national holidays. May 1 (Labour Day) is observed as a public holiday in many Indian states. Nonetheless, the entire nation is not required to observe this national bank holiday.
Apart from Labour Day, May 1 is also celebrated as the founding day of several Indian states including Gujarat Day and Maharashtra Day, therefore, banks in these states will remain shut. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the state governments of other states apart from Gujarat and Maharashtra have announced a bank holiday for May 1. Other states including Assam, Bihar, Goa, Gujarat, Manipur, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, Tripura, Jammu & Kashmir, and Delhi will also remain closed on Labour Day.

Despite banks being closed in several states, modern banking services like ATMs and other online transactions will remain unaffected. According to the RBI, banks are scheduled to remain closed for 12 days in May 2025, which includes both national and state-specific holidays. Customers are advised to keep these details in mind as they could affect key services such as visiting branches, cheque clearance, and transaction processing.
