While the Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day long weekend had big releases of Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Laal Singh Chaddha, and Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan, both had very low footfall. Following which, several shows of both the films were cancelled across the country.
Laal Singh Chaddhacollected approximately 11.50 crore nett on its first day and around Rs 37.50 crores nett after the weekend. The film is expected to make less than Rs 50 crores in the five-day long holiday, as per trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Adapted from the 1994 Tom Hanks starrer American classic film Forrest Gump which is based on the 1986 Winston Groom’s novel of the same name, Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan. The film is produced under the Aamir Khan Productions and Viacom 18 Studios in which Aamir is portraying Hanks’ role. The film also stars Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya, making his Bollywood debut, and Hindi actor Mona Singh in pivotal roles.
Going by the *current trends*, #LaalSinghChaddha and #RakshaBandhan won't be able to surpass *opening weekend* biz of #BhoolBhulaiyaa2 [₹ 55.96 cr; non-holiday; 3-day weekend], despite enjoying 5-day extended wknd, with 3 major holidays [#RakshaBandhan, Sun, #IndependenceDay].— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) August 15, 2022
While Akshay’s Raksha Bandhan opened even lower with a collection of Rs 7.5-8 crore nett and collected a little over Rs 27 crore over the four-day weekend. Based on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan itself, the actor plays the eldest brother to his four sisters in the film. He promises his mother on her deathbed that he will marry only when he has fulfilled all his responsibilities of marrying his sisters in suitable homes, but, on the way, he is at conflict between his responsibilities and his own love life.
