Indore has been listed as the cleanest city in India, yet again, by the Swachh Survekshan. President Draupadi Murmu felicitated the officials of the city with the Swachh Survekshan Award 2023 on the 11th of January, 2024. Along with Indore, Surat is sharing the title of the cleanest city in India.
Indore, the largest city in Madhya Pradesh, has won the title of the cleanest city in India for the seventh time in a row. Before this, in 2016, when the awards were organised for the first time, Indore had bagged the 25th position. Even since 2017, it has secured the topmost rank with immense dedication and consistency. But how has the city been able to maintain this position year after year? Here are three major reasons why Indore is the cleanest city in India.
Installation Of Dustbins
In 2016, Indore Nagar Nigam had installed dustbins every 500 metres in the city. This led to an increase in throwing garbage in the dustbins. Further, thousands of dustbins were distributed to those who drive vehicles for free of cost to ensure no garbage is thrown on the roads.
Bifurcating Waste
Indore Nagar Nigam has a strong new strategy of collecting waste only in a bifurcated manner. Wet waste is collected separately from dry waste. The garbage collectors refuse to accept when the waste is given in a mixed manner. Even NGOs have taken part in educating the citizens by visiting their houses about how to separate dry and wet waste and why it is important.

Building Toilets
In India, it is quite common to urinate or spit on the roads. Despite education (Education In England), people seem to lack ethics. However, Indore turned it around by installing many urinals around the city. Many NGOs took part in helping the government detect which areas needed urinals.
Educating Citizens
The government could install thousands of urinals and dustbins but citizens will not use them until they understand the importance of it. This is where the part of educating them comes in. The Indore government made sure that the citizens understood the value of these investments. Former Mayor Malini Gaud used to hold 400 meetings in a year and made lakhs of people take the oath to keep their city clean, as per Indian Express.
