Turning old newspapers into DIY wall art frames is a creative way to recycle and add a unique, rustic touch to your home decor. The process is simple and requires minimal materials. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
This is the most time-consuming part, but it's what gives the frame its unique texture. Take a single sheet of newspaper. You can use a half-sheet for thinner rolls or a full sheet for thicker ones. Starting from one corner, begin to roll the paper tightly around a pencil or a thin dowel rod. The tighter the roll, the sturdier your frame will be. Once you reach the end of the sheet, apply a small amount of glue to the last corner and press it down to secure the roll. Gently slide the pencil out. Repeat this process to create as many rolls as you need for your frame. You can also roll them at a slight angle to create a longer, tapered tube.
Once you have enough rolls, you can start assembling the frame. Cut a piece of cardboard to the desired size of your art. This will be the back of your frame. Lay out the newspaper rolls on the cardboard in the shape of a frame. You can place them side by side, stack them to create a thicker frame, or arrange them in a pattern. Cut the rolls to size using a craft knife or scissors. Make sure the ends are clean and straight for a neat finish. Glue the rolls to the cardboard base, creating the border for your artwork.

To make the frame more durable, you can use a clear sealant or varnish. This step is optional but highly recommended as it protects the newspaper from moisture and gives it a finished, professional look. Use a paintbrush or a sponge to apply a thin, even coat of varnish over the entire frame. Allow it to dry completely. You may need to apply a second coat for extra durability and shine. Once the frame is dry, you can insert your artwork, a photograph, or even a mirror in the centre.
To hang your new frame, simply glue a small loop of twine or string to the back of the cardboard. Alternatively, you can create a small hook from a paper clip and glue it to the top centre of the frame. Allow the glue to dry completely before hanging your new, eco-friendly wall art.
