If you are a Yo Yo Honey Singh Fan, then stop reading this right now because views expressed in this article may be too acidic for your health. Forget the empowering and enlightening lyrics of Gully Boy. Forget rap-stresses like Lilly Singh who call out sexism. One song from Honey Singh and we are back to the regressive, sexist mindset of the time when songs like Main Hu Balatkaari were released. So Honey Singh is back and my, what a comeback it is! The guy just continues to maintain his uber-cool image in the same old music videos, surrounded by semi-clad girls throwing themselves on him, even as he sings line after line demeaning them, reducing them to objects that are present just to satisfy his lust. This time, his song 'Makhna' says how a girl is like his ‘appetizer’ (forgive me as I choke on this!).
Give This Man An Award Please
Check out the lyrics and be amazed that how we live in a country where naari samman makes people throw stones at kids to ban a movie about a woman while songs like this are released a dime a dozen:
Tujhe diamond jaise sambhaal ke rakhana (rakhana)
Tere pyaar ka appetizer chakhana (chakhana)
Main aur mere kalaakaar
Sab baith ke karen chhill
Par main hoon womaniser
Mujhe akele mein mat mil
Silicon vaalee ladakee ko main pakadata nahee
Brown girl se mera dil bharata nahee
Kyonki main hoon sher
Ghaas charta nahee
Tu hai patli see naari
Par mera weight ho gaya hai thoda bhaaree
Tu hai jaanti main hoon shikaari
Tujhe kha jaoonga saari kee saari
Kyon ghabaraati, baaten chhupaati
Paas bulaake, door kyoon jaati
Din mein too mil chaahe mil mainu raati
Feeling sick yet?
Well, you are not alone. These lyrics sound downright cringe-worthy and like a verbal rape of a woman. Proudly saying that he is a womaniser, Honey Singh goes on to say that he is ahunter so basically meaning that women are supposed to be preyed upon. But this is not just about him as an artist. I would also like to point fingers at all the people who idolise him. Just when you think that people are going crazy over the meaningful rap lyrics of Gully Boy where things like politics, poverty, caste, gender problems, are talked about, along comes this video that has garnered 182,360,481 views and 2.8 million likes even as I am writing this. Some accolades should also go to the women who collaborate with such artists on this. So the models and singers who choose to feature (I say choose because hello, you are not forced to do this!) on such albums are also offenders as they are doing the greatest disservice to their own gender. Shame on you, I say.

Music Or Disease - O What Is It, Honey?
While other similar music albums continue with subtle sexist undertones of a woman always wanting to shop with a man’s money, demanding Lamborghini and Gucci, treating a man badly, they are still nowhere near the lines of Honey Singh’s songs. It seems like his record is stuck on making women feel like dumb slaves even as the world is trying to move on with better stuff. I am all for freedom of expression but where is the censorship on this? And Bollywood is no better so it’s not like only the pop artists are spreading this virus.
As a woman, all I can pray and hope for is that our voices are heard and change can come. I would surely not want my generation and the next generations to enjoy such songs thinking that it’s okay to be proud of being a fan of such music.
