Written and directed by Bilal Lashari, the Pakistani-Punjabi action drama film The Legend of Maula Jatt starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan has broken global records for an opening weekend for a Pakistani or a Punjabi film. With a budget of ₹55 crores, the film released on October 13, 2022 and has already collected ₹51 crores globally.
The Legend of Maula Jatt is a remake of the popular 1979 cult Punjabi classic film Maula Jat. The film, which has been touted as Game of Thrones meets Gladiator by an international publication, is a modern take and retelling of the legendary rivalry between a local hero Maula Jatt and his arch nemesis, who is a brutal gang leader Noori Natt. In this story of truth, honour and justice, the former is a prizefighter with a tortured past, who seeks revenge against Natt, one of the most feared warriors in the land of Punjab, when their families are torn apart and loyalties are challenged.
As per a news report, The Legend of Maula Jatt is the highest-budgeted film in Pakistan that collected $517K, and $355K from 79 locations in the United Kingdom. While in the U.S., The Legend of Maula Jatt grossed $290K, $235Kin Canada, and collected $515K in the UAE. In Australia, it opened at sixth with $160K.
Speaking about the film, director Lashari said, “I’m beyond overwhelmed by the love the film has received from audiences and critics alike the world over. We are so proud that The Legend of Maula Jatt has been instrumental in putting Pakistan-made cinema on the global map as it continues to win over hearts in theaters across the world.”
While producer Ammara Hikmat said, “The Legend of Maula Jatt has been our labor of love for a number of years. The pandemic came and returned but we knew we had to hold out for a theatrical release, as the film is undoubtedly a big screen experience… We’re so delighted that our film has broken previous records and set a new benchmark for Pakistan-made cinema, loved and lauded not only domestically but by audiences and critics globally.”

Prior to this, the highest-opening Pakistani film was the 2018 Urdu comedy film Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 that collected $331,048 at the box office globally, as per IMDb.
